Will There Be A ‘Scott Pilgrim Takes Off’ Season 2? Bryan O’Malley Explains That Mid-Credits Scene

C’mon, Netflix, give us more! We’re in lesbians with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The anime adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley‘s popular graphic novels hit the streaming giant on November 17, 2023 with shocking character expansions and new relationships. But eight episodes aren’t enough… We need a Season 2!

Developed by O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, the action-comedy series premiered with eight 30-minute episodes following the budding relationship between Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) and Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

After their first date, Scott finds out that in order to continue pursuing Ramona, he must defeat her seven evil exes.  But unlike O’Malley’s novels and the 2010 cult movie adaptation, the battle is over as soon as it begins… Which makes way for an entirely new adventure.

The series sees the return of the entire cast from the movie, with Cera and Winstead taking on lead roles and the star-studded ensemble consisting of Brie Larson, Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza, Kieran Culkin, and more.

The debut season concludes with Scott and Ramona finding their way back to one another after being separated. But then, a mid-credit scene shows Julie (Plaza) and evil ex Gideon Graves (Jason Schwartzman) in a room with dozens of screens monitoring Scott’s life. What does that mean? Will There Be A Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Season 2 on Netflix? 

We’ve got some good news and some bad news. Let’s rip off the band-aid first: Netflix has not yet renewed Scott Pilgrim Takes Off for a second season. While that seems potentially ambiguous because the show just recently premiered, it should also be noted that the streamer has had a noticeably poor track record with animated shows over the past few years. 

But, Netflix has a habit of renewing genre shows with large audiences. For example, One Piece, The Sandman, and Wednesday – all shows based on an existing IP — received renewals for their sophomore season.

And even better, O’Malley and Grabinski seem open to making more. Decider spoke with the creators in anticipation of the show’s premiere and inquired about any future plans, as well as the mid-credit sequence, during which, Gideon says, “Time for the real game to begin.”

To some, this may seem like the set-up for future installments, but O’Malley insists that it was a “fun little parody of post-credit scenes.” But don’t be too dismayed, as the creator added, “If we ever did magically get to make more, maybe we could play with that idea… But it really was just something we threw out there as a fun little thing. And it does end the story arc for those two, now they’re together.”
