Emily Hampshire has issued an apology for what many have deemed an “insensitive” and “beyond disgusting” Halloween costume.

The Schitt’s Creek star, along with a friend, dressed up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard on Tuesday (Oct. 31), capturing the former couple’s appearances from their tumultuous trial held last spring. Hampshire dressed as Depp, while her unidentified friend was Heard.

Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard after she described herself as a “public figure for domestic abuse” in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed, per USA Today. Ultimately, Depp won the lawsuit, in which both actors accused each other of traumatic abuse.

While she has since deleted the post, screenshots taken before its removal by BuzzFeed News revealed Hampshire in a tan suit, slicked back hair, fake facial hair and tattoos, and an earring. The actress’ friend was wearing a white buttoned-up blouse, and pretended to cry in each of the pictures, mocking Heard’s expression featured in pictures taken during the trial.

The two also played into the actors’ accusations of abuse with props; specifically, holding fake fecal matter to signify Depp accusing Heard of defecating on his side of the bed and blaming it on their dogs, and a wine bottle, which may allude to Heard alleging that Depp sexually assaulted her.

After being slammed by fans online, Hampshire took to Instagram on Wednesday (Nov. 1) to express her regret.

“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done,” she wrote. “For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.”

She continued, “I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I REALLY regret my actions. In the future, I will do better. I’m so sorry.”
