Nothing is off-limits in American Horror Story! In the second episode of the new season, Delicate, titled “Rockabye,” reality star Kim Kardashian continued to establish herself as a comedy queen by making a stealthy comment about her 2022 Marilyn Monroe dress controversy.
In the series, Kardashian plays publicist Siobhan Corbyn, who represents Emma Roberts’s Anna Victoria Alcott, a famous actor in the midst of receiving loads of award-show attention.
Anna finds herself nominated for a Gotham Award — which recognizes independent movies — and in talks of an Oscar nomination after making a starry appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live talk show.
Siobhan shows Anna her dress for the award show and it turns out to be Madonna’s iconic white dress that she wore to the 1991 Oscars when she was nominated for Best Original Song for the 1990 movie Dick Tracy.
Fans were quick to pick up that the situation bears resemblance to Kardashian donning the dress that Marilyn Monroe wore during her infamous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” performance for John F. Kennedy in 1962 at the 2022 Met Gala. The reality star received heavy backlash for undergoing grueling prep work to fit into the original garment.
Kardashian was accused of damaging the dress in various manners, including stressing the fabric, damaging the zipper, and missing beads and sequins. However, the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum claims the dress was returned “in the same condition it started in.”
As the episode continues, Siobhan helps Anna into the dress and she tells her “Don’t rip it,” as she zips up the back. The two venture into Anna’s bedroom to admire her look in the mirror – still defaced from the home invasion in the first episode – and they begin to sing Madonna’s Oscar-winning song “Sooner or Later”. The scene is cut short as, in true horror fashion, the mirror mysteriously shatters, perhaps for the best given the stiffness of the musical moment.
Anna ends up wearing the dress to the Gotham Awards, where things go horrifically wrong and she has a psychotic episode on stage while accepting the award. Moments prior, she had an altercation with a passionate fan in the bathroom, which led to Anna pushing the fan from her and the fan to losing her balance, cracking her head on the bathroom sink. Without time to react, Anna is rushed out of the bathroom because the nominations for her award category is announced. While making her speech, she envisions the seemingly dead fan in the audience.
But don’t worry, Anna didn’t get blood on the archival dress.
Fans enjoyed the Marylin Monroe reference on social, with one writing, “Did y’all catch Kim’s dig at herself when she said try not to rip the dress?” Another added, “Oh lord now they are trying to remind us of Marilyn dress gate in this episode.”
With Kardashian making headlines for her stellar debut in Ryan Murphy’s hit anthology series and now this top-tier shade, she is sure making a splash in the acting world. Who knows, maybe she whip out a kitschy archival favorite for her prospective Emmy nom!
