There was a lot to scream about during The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s eventful Season 2 finale, which dropped on Prime Video Thursday, August 17. But in the final moments of “Love Triangle,” after Belly finally chose between Conrad and Jeremiah, one tiny detail sent fans squealing: Belly’s glass unicorn.

In interviews, creator Jenny Han has been open about the care she takes in adapting her stories into series, and she’s made sure to sprinkle Easter eggs throughout The Summer I Turned Pretty for fans of her bestselling YA books. The glass unicorn, which Conrad places on Belly’s dresser as he’s unpacking her room in the Cousins beach house at the end of Season 2, is one of those details. And though this isn’t the first time we got a glimpse of the glass unicorn during the show’s two seasons, after Belly and Jer decided to give their relationship another shot, the sight of that precious figurine gave Team Conrad some much-needed hope again.

So why were The Summer I Turned Pretty fans so obsessed with the glass unicorn’s appearance in the Season 2 finale? And what’s the meaning behind the glass unicorn in The Summer I Turned Pretty books? We’ve got the answers.

The Summer I Turned Pretty‘s Glass Unicorn, Explained

Anyone who’s read The Summer I Turned Pretty books know the glass unicorn was a special birthday gift to Belly from Conrad. The figurine apparently cost $20, Belly kept it even after its horn broke off, and its inclusion in the series was very intentional.

“I tried every opportunity to to add in little details from the books that the eagle-eyed viewers would recognize,” Han told BuzzFeed in a 2022 interview. “…There’s a glass unicorn, which is like a figurine from the books. Unless you were really looking hard, you wouldn’t be able to notice, but that was important to me that we had one in the room.”

That glass unicorn has been chilling, patiently waiting for its moment in the spotlight like Junior Mint, and the Season 2 finale was its time to shine. With seconds left in the episode, Team Jellyfish was thriving and Team Bonrad (?!) was sulking. But Conrad unpacking the glass unicorn, delicately placing it in Belly’s room, and standing over it for a noticeably LONG time resorted hope, satisfied readers, and teased a Season 3 in which anything can happen.

Are we getting a glass unicorn flashback in Season 3? Is this a subtle sign that Conrad and Belly will be endgame after all? Only time will tell. Until then, while we await new episodes The Summer I Turned Pretty is streaming on Prime Video for all of your rewatch needs.
