Patti LuPone opened up about politics during her recent visit to The View. The stage and screen actor called anti-transgender legislation “extremely upsetting” and compared Christianity to the Taliban, which is an Islamic extremist group.

During Tuesday’s (April 18) broadcast of the ABC talk show, LuPone turned the tables to discuss the recent wave of anti-transgender legislation in the United States.

LuPone began, “That is extremely upsetting. These are human beings. I could cry. They’re not harming anybody.”

The actor commented on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s recent efforts to expand “Don’t Say Gay” laws – barring public schools from teaching about sexuality and gender identity – and his other attacks against the trans community, such as protesting Bud Light for partnering with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

LuPone said, “I don’t know why he’s doing this.”

The American Horror Story actor added, “I have said this before, and it’s been in print. I don’t know what the difference between our Christian right and the Taliban is. I have no idea what the difference is.” The View co-host Whoopi Goldberg was the first to agree: “You’re not the only person who’s said that.”

LuPone continued, “I just don’t know what the differences are! What’s happening in this country right now, in the name of religion, is so dangerous.”

Throughout the segment, the Grammy Winner also stated that former U.S. President Donald Trump getting arrested was “not enough,” and criticized other institutions for not challenging against his claims.

“I’m so upset that there’s no pushback when he lies. I would like to police that cried to come forward and say ‘Yes, we cried,’ or if the police at the courthouse didn’t cry, go. ‘What’s he talking about? He’s lying to you. We did not cry!’ But there’s no push back,” she explained.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump claimed that police officers at the NYC courthouse were “crying” out of sympathy when they saw him at his arraignment.

In addition to this political chatter, LuPone also revealed details about her Marvel debut in the upcoming Disney+ series Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which is a spin-off of WandaVision.

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
