Al Roker shared some exciting news on this morning’s episode of Today. The longtime anchor, who endured a tough few months of health struggles, had a happy reveal to share with viewers Wednesday when he announced he is going to be a grandpa for the first time.

“My daughter Courtney and her husband Wes are expecting our first grandchild,” he said.

When asked by his Today co-anchors “what kind of grandpa” he plans to be, Roker replied, “It depends on what you consider the best — for this grandchild, I’m going to be the best grandpa ever because I’m going to do whatever I can to spoil this kid, and then hand her back.”

As for what he’ll be called in his new role, Roker said he’s going with the name Pop-Pop, a fitting moniker as he and his co-hosts popped some champagne to celebrate the sweet news.

“I think in honor of my dad, I’m going to try to go for ‘Pop-Pop,'” Roker said as he clinked glasses with the other Today anchors.

Along with a celebratory drink, Roker was also treated to a new gift for the baby: some Today-themed onesies.

Courtney first announced her pregnancy news on Tuesday (March 14), when she posted a video to Instagram featuring a sonogram and photos of herself and her husband. Roker commented on the post, “Here we go!!! So very very happy!!!!! You guys.”

Courtney also released a statement to TODAY.com, saying, “We are extremely excited to welcome a new member into our family and start this next chapter in our lives. We feel truly blessed and excited for our little miracle.”

Roker shares Courtney with his ex-wife, Alice Bell. He also shares daughter Leila and son Nick with his wife, Deborah Roberts.

Today airs weekdays at 7 a.m. ET on NBC.
