7 Shows Like ‘The Blacklist’ If You Love The Series

We’ve got a love-hate relationship with NBC right now.

We love them for announcing The Blacklist will return for a tenth season; but we hate them for saying it’s going to be the show’s last. Whoever made the latter decision deserves a spot on Red’s list, because canceling one of America’s favorite primetime dramas? Well, that’s just criminal.

From the show’s inception in 2013, The Blacklist has received rave reviews from critics and viewers alike. Boasting a score above 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and multiple Golden Globe nominations (shout out to James Spader for those), we aren’t surprised the series made a run for as long as it did. The years it had to carve a space in our hearts and living rooms, however, just kinda make it suck a little more that it’s ending.

Now, though we can’t change Fox’s production decisions, we can offer you some good news: there are a bunch of other shows similar to The Blacklist. So, whether you like procedurals, crime dramas, international terrorists or spies, read on.

Here are seven shows to watch after Red crosses the last name off his list.

'The Blacklist: Redemption' (2017)

When it comes to shows like The Blacklist, you can’t get more similar than its literal spin-off, The Blacklist: Redemption. Following secret agent Tom Keen as he sets off on a new path in an international security organization, Redemption features a couple characters from the original series, but in new settings and circumstances.

'Blindspot' (2015)

Another FBI thriller, Blindspot follows protagonist Jane Doe after she wakes up naked in Times Square covered in strange tattoos. With no recollection of who she is (or how she arrived in the city), she quickly realizes that the ink on her body contains clues to crimes, and that solving those cases are the key to gaining her identity back. Watch carefully as Jane uncovers her backstory and you’re sure to get major Liz Keen vibes.

'Criminal Minds' (2005)

Criminal Minds has been turning out new episodes since 2005, making it one of TV’s longest running crime dramas. Centered around a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, the show explores the inner mental mechanisms of the world’s most dangerous people. The goal of the unit? To identify predators’ motivations in time to stop them.

'Person of Interest' (2011)

Like Red in The Blindspot, CIA agent John Reese and software genius Harold Finch similarly follow a list of criminal (or impending criminal) names in Person of Interest. While Red gets his names from personal experience, Reese and Finch’s are fed to them through a high-tech surveillance AI that the latter invented. If you’re looking to spice up your daily crime media consumption with some science fiction, this two-time People’s Choice Award winner is the perfect series for you.

'Homeland' (2011)

Homeland

Showtime’s acclaimed thriller series Homeland has lots in common with The Blacklist. With a heavy focus on international terrorism (and the same Washington D.C. setting), the show follows CIA agent Carrie Mathison as she digs deep into the case of Nicholas Brody, a marine sergeant who suddenly arrives home after eight years in captivity. Though he is heralded by the US public as a war hero, Carrie quickly becomes suspicious of his storyand his intentions.

'Gotham' (2014)

Prior to Batman’s arrival in Gotham, Detective James Gordon was in charge of keeping the city safe. Fox’s 2014 series Gotham follows Gordon in his mission to protect civilians and combat corruption, while simultaneously chronicling the life of young Bruce Wayne (future Batman, if you’re unfamiliar) who was orphaned following the murder of his billionaire parents. Like The BlacklistGotham‘s episodes are written in a procedural format. Further, both shows feature highly-skilled killers and villains that tend to be more haunting, memorable and entertaining than most other television criminals.

'24' (2001)

24 is one of our all-time favorite crime dramas. The series deals with many of the same themes as The Blacklist (terrorism, torture, politics etc.), but in a completely unconventional format. Each episode of the show unfolds in real-time, meaning it covers one singular hour of counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer’s life. The seasons have 24 episodes a piece, thus equating one season to a full day. When we watch the show, we don’t know what impresses us more: the creativity of its writing and structure, or the incredible ability of Agent Bauer to never sleep.
