George R. R. Martin Claims Projects Have Been Shelved Due to “Changes at HBO Max”

The future isn’t looking bright for future Game of Thrones spinoffs as George R. R. Martin claims that some have been shelved due to changes at HBO Max. The author wrote in a blog post on Wednesday (Dec. 28) that he is developing several shows with HBO in succession to House of the Dragon, but it sounds like things aren’t going so smoothly.

“Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon,” he wrote.

Martin continued, “A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”

The creator confirmed that he is currently working on House of the Dragon Season 2, which has already been greenlit by the streamer.

Decider has reached out to HBO Max representatives for comment.

HBO Max has faced numerous complaints about the changes following WarnerMedia’s (the streamer’s parent company) merger with Discovery earlier this year. Several shows have been canceled as a result, including Gordita Chronicles, Minx and Made For Love.

The streamer has also been under fire for the cancellation of the almost-finished DC movie, Batgirl, and for removing content from their platform, which Vulture credits to tax break reasons.

Martin reportedly has several shows in development, including a series adaptation of the Game of Thrones prequel Tales of Dunk and Egg and a Jon Snow spinoff, set to star Kit Harington.

Martin also reflected on the attention his House of the Dragon series has received from awards shows, writing, “Congratulations are due to House of the Dragon and Emma d’Arcy for their Golden Globes nominations, and to Milly Alcock, Matt Smith, and the show for the Critic’s Choice Award nods.”

The writer added, “Well deserved. Fingers and toes crossed for all of them.”

He also stated that he hopes Paddy Considine, Steve Toussaint, Olivia Cooke and Emily Carey “get some love” from the Emmy Awards.
