Top Gun: Maverick is flying high! The action movie premiered to great success on Paramount+ last week, proving its timelessness. The streaming giant shared that the movie has become their most-watched movie over its premiere weekend.
According to a press release from Paramount Pictures, the Tom Cruise vehicle has reached this success while maintaining popularity on VOD platforms like iTunes, where the movie is occupying the number two spot.
The movie, directed by Joseph Kosinski, was released on the streamer on Thursday, Dec. 22, nearly seven months after its theatrical premiere on May 27.
Paramount did not disclose viewership numbers, however, it eclipsed Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (which previously held the most-watched record on the streamer) by 60%; Mission: Impossible by 150%; and the 1986 Top Gun by a whopping 400%.
“The runaway success of this film across theatrical, digital and now in streaming is an undeniable proof point demonstrating the power of Paramount’s multi-platform release strategy,” Brian Robbins, Chief Content Officer of movies at Paramount+, said in a statement.
Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer of Paramount Streaming, echoed the statement, saying, “We are thrilled to see a continuation of the film’s massive record-breaking success by becoming the #1 most-watched movie premiere on Paramount+.”
Giles added, “We continue to benefit from the highly anticipated theatrical hits from Paramount Pictures that come to the service delivering fans a new way to continue to watch and re-watch their favorite movies.”
Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel to the original movie by Tony Scott and Joseph Kosinski, starring Cruise reprising his eponymous role, Maverick. The crowd pleaser is currently nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Original Song.
The movie found itself on Decider’s Best Movies of 2022 list, with Meghan O’Keefe writing, “Top Gun: Maverick isn’t just a wholly thrilling and effecting ride, but a reminder that the magic of movies is sometimes simply that they’re fun.”
Top Gun: Maverick is currently streaming on Paramount+ and VOD services.
