‘Stranger Things Tokyo’ Anime Series In The Works At Netflix

Details have emerged about a planned expansion of the hit Stranger Things franchise.

According to What’s on Netflix, an anime series titled Stranger Things Toyko is currently in the works at Netflix.

While The Duffer Brothers had previously teased that a spinoff of some kind would be made either before or after the conclusion of the flagship series, there were no further details until now.

Although details on the project are still limited, a brief logline reads: “An encounter with the Upside Down evolves into a grand adventure for video game-loving twin brothers living on the outskirts of 1980s Tokyo.”

The series, which is “the first” Stranger Things spinoff, will run about 6 hours long in total.

The Duffer Brothers most recently hinted about a spinoff in their season 4 Twitter announcement, letting fans know they could still expect more thrilling stories from the Stranger Things universe which would follow “new mysteries, new adventures, [and] new unexpected heroes” after the series ends.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Duffer said the spin-off would be “1,000% different” from the original and added it’d be a “story that connects to the Stranger Things world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”

While the anime series will be the first of its kind, Stranger Things had previously gone animated for three Stranger Things games, including Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales which recently was moved over to Netflix Games exclusively. You can check out a trailer for that game above.

Stranger Things itself will return for a fifth and final season sometime in 2024, with filming set to begin in May 2023.

The Duffer Brothers are currently bound to Netflix under an overall deal and are working on other projects beyond Stranger Things including The Talisman and the Death Note live-action adaptation of the anime series.
