Joy Behar Confesses Her Father Didn’t Think She Was Pretty on ‘The View’: “Whatever, He’s Dead Now”

Perhaps Joy Behar should have majored in psychology. During today’s episode of The Viewthe co-host gave Sunny Hostin a lesson in therapy — and even opened up about some of the childhood trauma she endured that sticks with her all these years later.

Hostin, who said she’s “probably a lunatic most of the time,” revealed that she has never been to therapy, despite saying, “I’m sure I need it.” She added that Behar is always preaching that “most of your adult behavior stems from some sort of childhood trauma,” prompting the host to explain the theory.

“It’s like if you have a wound and you put a bandaid on it, it will never heal because it doesn’t get air. You’ve got to air the wound,” Behar said. “And you’ve got to also understand why your behavior today is your unconscious mind telling you what to do rather than your conscious mind.”

When Sara Haines pointed out that “what’s traumatic as you’re developing, could be very minor to your adult self,” Hostin asked, “What if your sister took your cookie? Are you going to then be a stingy person for the rest of your life because your sister took your cookie?”

Meanwhile, Dr. Behar concluded that she must be in a sibling rivalry and advised that she “work on that.” She went on to tell the panel that there are “some things that stick in your mind,” including the time her father said someone else was prettier than her when she was a child.

Though he claimed he was “teasing,” Behar said the comment stuck with her. She added, “Like if your father doesn’t think you’re pretty, you don’t think you’re pretty,” before letting out a cry and exclaiming, “This is so sad!”

However, in typical Behar fashion, she rounded out on a positive(?) note — one that no one at the table knew how to respond to.

“Whatever, he’s dead now,” she quipped, before insisting, “I liked him, actually. He was very funny.”

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
