‘The Price of Glee’ Promises To Explore The Show’s “Curse” That Left Three Main Cast Members Dead

A new show on Investigation Discovery is peeling back some of the mystery surrounding the phenomenon that was the television show Glee. The Price of Glee, a three-part documentary series, will not only focus on the show’s swift rise, but also its darker side, digging into the deaths of three main cast members: Naya Rivera, Cory Monteith, and Mark Salling.

A dramatic trailer for the series dropped today, featuring interviews with plenty of Glee-adjacent figures, but no actual cast members.

At one point in the trailer, Rivera’s father — whose daughter died in a tragic drowning accident in 2020 — tells the camera, “Fame can be poisonous.”  Another subject, Stephen Kramer Glickman, who is best known for his role on the Nickelodeon series Big Time Rush, says, “My first reaction is blame. I still feel like there is someone to blame.”

Other subjects speak about Monteith, who died in 2013 of a drug overdose, and Mark Salling, who died by suicide in 2017 after pleading guilty to charges pertaining to possession of child pornography.

While the subjects in the trailer have plenty to say about Glee, it’s unclear if the people who experienced the show first-hand are actually involved in this new docuseries, since there’s no trace of them. In the last few months, Glee has been having a moment on social media, with two of the former cast members even launching a podcast  titled And That’s What You Really Missed to give Gleeks behind the scenes insight.

Glee fans are already slamming The Price of Glee on social media, with tweets flooding in after the trailer release about how “disgusted” they are with the show.

Glee was created in 2009 by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and centered around a fictional high school glee club in Ohio called the New Directions. The show launched the careers of several of today’s stars, among them Lea Michele, Darren Criss and Amber Riley. Other stars of the show included Mathew Morrison and Jane Lynch, along with guests stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow and John Stamos.

The Price of Glee will air on ID and discovery+ on Jan. 16, 2023. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
