Where Was ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ Filmed? Top Filming Locations

Where the Crawdads Sing is now available to stream on Netflix, and Daisy Edgar Jones has stayed booked and busy this year starring as Kya Clark, the mysterious marsh girl. After being abandoned one by one by her family, Kya grows up alone in the marshlands of North Carolina, isolated from the judgmental townsfolk (though some of her outfits look they could’ve been from Reformation.) Now a young woman, the attention from two men from town start to bring her out of her shell. When one of them winds up dead, all fingers point to Kya.

Loved the movie so much you’re ready for your own marshy southeastern adventure? Read on for the filming locations! Spoiler alert, none of them are in North Carolina.

According to Vanity Fair and Bustle.com, production took place solely in Louisiana – specifically the New Orleans North Shore marshlands and the city of Houma. Houma was transformed to reflect the time periods of the ’50s and ’60s. Meanwhile, sets in the marsh were reportedly flooded frequently, crew members were taunted by mosquitos, and the Louisiana heat did nothing to help the situation. Sounds like being an extra on this set wouldn’t have been the most pleasurable experience…

The North Shore is considered to be the land north of Lake Pontchartrain. According to the Louisiana North Shore website, there’s lots to do in the area. Less than an hour away from the bustling action of New Orleans, tourists can take swamp tours, birdwatch, and explore over 80,000 acres of wildlife refuges. Don’t worry, unlike Kya’s cabin there are plenty swanky lodges to rest in at the end of the day.
