‘The Kardashians’ Reveals Why The Back of Kim’s Marilyn Dress Looked So…Interesting

The Kardashians Season 2 is coming to a close, but not before we get the inside scoop on Met Monday.

In Episode 9, aptly titled “It’s Met Monday!”, we finally witness the Kardashians, Jenners, and Pete Davidson attend the 2022 Met Gala. And more importantly, we finally see Kim slip into the iconic dress Marilyn Monroe wore during her famous 1962 “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” performance for John F. Kennedy.

Season 2 of the Hulu reality series gave us immense insight into Kim’s dress saga and revealed she was “nervous” that she’d receive backlash for wearing it, but when Met Monday finally arrived, Kim still had more outfit tidbits to share. For instance, did you know a tailor bedazzled her SKIMS to match the dress in case of wardrobe malfunction? Yes, really.

Kim barely fit the historic dress, so she planned to cover up the back with a shawl while walking the red carpet. But in case of a wardrobe malfunction, her tailor bedazzled a nude pair of SKIMS (Kim’s shape-wear) to match. After getting glammed up and finally receiving the Black Chyna lawsuit verdict, the gals put their dresses on, and Kim dished on her special SKIMS.

“There is nothing more important than this dress, so every precaution was taken,” Kim told cameras. “I mean, I even had a tailor bedazzle my SKIMS to match the dress so that when the tie is open you couldn’t really tell that the dress wasn’t closed.”

“So, he did this to my shapewear for the back when I can’t close it,” she said, pointing to the jewels on the front of the dress. “So god forbid if it pops up you’ll see that, you know? I think that’s so cute.”

After she walked the red carpet, some people wondered if she damaged the Marilyn dress, because her backside and the ties were visible in several photos. But according to The Kardashians, Kim didn’t bust or tear the dress. In fact, she didn’t even force the back closed. She simply improvised, became content with the open back, and had her tailor bedazzle her SKIMS to match the dress as closely as possible.

Though Kim received an avalanche of criticism for wearing the icon’s dress, during the episode, John Corcoran, Director at Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, complimented her careful treatment of and consideration for the garment. “You’re so good with the artifacts. If this icon thing doesn’t work out, you can come work with me in archives,” he said. Kim assured her he respected the dress and was honored to wear it, SKIMS and all.
