‘The Resort’ Ending Explained: Will There Be a Season 2 of the Peacock Series?

If you love the setting of The White Lotus, the chaos and confusion of Lost, the mystery of Only Murders in the Building, or the adventure of The Goonies, chances are you’ll love Peacock‘s original series The Resort and its Season 1 finale.

The mysterious dark comedy was created by Andy Siara, writer of the beloved 2020 time loop rom-com, Palm Springs, which stars one of The Resort‘s leads, Cristin Milioti. In The Resort, Milioti assumes her signature “weird, morbid chick” role as Emma, a high-school teacher on an anniversary getaway with her husband Noah (William Jackson Harper). After uncovering evidence in a 15-year-old murder/missing persons case, the couple spends their vacation searching for answers.

What is The Resort About? The Resort Plot Summary:

The Resort is an eight-episode Peacock original series that follows strained couple Emma (Milioti) and Noah (Harper) as they attempt to emotionally reconnect and rekindle their burnt out flame on vacation at a luxurious resort. They were once wild about each other, but they’ve drifted since the loss of their baby daughter, and we get the sense they’ve never properly grieved or discussed the tragedy.

Emma is miserable on the trip, but she finds unexpected joy when she stumbles on an old Motorola Razr in the jungle. After popping the SIM card into a functional Razr, she learns the phone belonged to a teen named Sam (Skyler Gisondo) who disappeared 15 years earlier with another teen, Violet (Nina Bloomgarden). As Emma and Noah set out to solve the mystery with help from former resort employees Baltasar Frías (Luis Gerardo Méndez) and Luna (Gabriela Cartol), flashbacks of Sam and Violet in 2007 help viewers fill in the gaps.

Throughout the series, Emma and Noah get closer to uncovering the truth about Sam and Violet, and in a flashback-heavy Season 1 finale they finally crack the case.

The Resort Season 1 Ending, Explained:

Season 1, Episode 8, “The Disillusionment of Time,” opens with a view of a dark, mysterious cave tunnel before cutting to Sam, who’s asleep on a tarp in the middle of the jungle. Violet, who’s awake next to him, gets up and wanders off on her own in search of Pasaje, which she believes is a passage that will allow her to transcend time and reunite with her dead mother. We see Violet climb down into a hole in the ground, and the show leaps to present-day where Baltasar, Emma, Noah, and Violet’s dad Murray (Nick Offerman) are exploring the same mysterious cavern Violet disappeared into years earlier.

Armed with flashlights, the four adventurers uncover a boat-like flotation device attached to a rope. They hop aboard, make it to the other side of the water, and emerge from the cave into daylight. The scenery is gorgeous, but it ultimately feels unremarkable. Is this Pasaje? It couldn’t be, could it? Just as they’re about to abandon their search, Baltazar and Emma each find tunnels. The group splits up with Baltazar and Murray exploring one and Noah and Emma investigating the other.

We flash back to Sam sleeping on his tarp. After hurricane rain wakes him up he frantically searches for Violet, who’s wandering around a cave, shoulder-deep in flood water. She’s holding a flashlight and her mom’s book, but before we learn more we cut back to present-day, where her dad is telling Baltasar what happened to him after Violet went missing. Murray explains he went to every resort in the Yucatán Peninsula looking for her. He called in all the favors he earned during his years as a U.S. government employee, but eventually everyone gave up the search, including him. He lost himself for a while, but after an epiphany he decided to pick up his search. Baltasar finds a pile of eggs in the cave and a yellow snake with — yep, you guessed it — four noses. He decides to fuck with the yellow snake, wrestles it, and eventually talks it down? I don’t know. Just go with it. We flash back to Violet, who can’t find her way out of the cave. The water’s rising and she hears Sam call her name. The two embrace and try to escape, only to realize they’re trapped.

We leap forward again to check in with Emma and Noah, who get chased by a bunch of bats into a dead end of the cave. They find an old flashlight on the ground and a hole in the cave wall overhead. After a quick flashback to Violet and Sam, who are full-on drowning, Noah gived Emma a boost into the hole, and she crawls down a long tunnel.

“It was stupid for you to follow me in here,” Violet tells Sam in a flashback. “All in all I think it’s still better than talking to Hannah about her professor’s penis,” he replies. They scream for help and embrace underwater.

In present-day, Emma’s in a crisis of her own. The tunnel grows so narrow she gets stuck. “I’m not okay! I’m stuck! I’m really scared,” Emma sobs to Noah. Milioti delivers a superb performance, fully breaking down and flashing back to the loss of her child. After hearing her baby cry she’s opens her eyes with newfound determination and claws her way out of the tunnel. As the music swells she makes it to the end and discovers a pool of milky water. Swirling around in the pool are Violet and Sam, whose bodies are fully preserved. Pasaje! Emma hears a baby laugh and she cries tears of joy. She pulls Violet’s hand, and the teen casually wakes up and gets out of the water. Emma taps Sam and he starts coughing, then follows Violet’s lead before saying, “Hey! Who are you?”

Outside the cave, Baltasar and Murray see Violet and Sam emerge. Violet walks towards her father asking, “Dad? What’s going on?” When Sam and Baltasar meet face to face Sam says, “What the fuck’s happening right now?” Turns out Emma and Noah haven’t broken the news yet. After the group climbs back up the hole that led to Pasaje, they talk through everything.

“These guys just transcended time. They’re fucking heroes. It’s bananas!” Baltasar says. Sam asks to use Noah’s phone to call his parents and he’s hilariously baffled by the high-tech iPhone before him. Meanwhile, Emma catches up with Violet and asks if Pasaje was real. “Did you see her?” Emma asks, referencing Violet’s late mother. She nods. “Was it worth it?” Emma inquires. “It still hurts,” Violet replies, and Emma — likely thinking of the baby she lost — assures her it gets better.

Sam called his parents, but they hung up on him because they thought he was pulling a prank. As Noah and Emma wait for a helicopter, Noah asks, “Why didn’t you get in the water?” Emma replies, “I didn’t want to lose 15 years.” Baltasar joins them and says, “Well, we did it. I guess we’re not terrible detectives after all.” He tries to convince them that he did fight a yellow snake with his bare hands, and Emma reflects on the whole journey, saying, “It all kind of seems like a bunch of bullshit.”

After the helicopter comes to rescue them, the final scene shows Baltasar and Luna sharing a drink by the resort’s pool. Baltasar argues that the outcome of the missing teen mystery was beautiful, because in the end, everyone was reunited. Luna has other ideas. “They lost time. You see that, right? It’s pretty on the surface but if you squint it’s fucked up,” she says. Baltasar asks if she’s curious about Pasaje and suggests they go in for 30 seconds just to see what happens. She says he should come work with her instead, and he declines her offer, explaining he has somewhere to go. He hands her a paper and walks off, but when he turns to leave we see the back of his jacket has a picture of him, Luna, and Alex watching fireworks on one on the best nights of his life. In the season’s final seconds, Luna reads the paper he handed her and smiles, but we don’t know why.

Will There Be a Season 2 of The Resort?

While The Resort hasn’t officially been renewed for a Season 2, the praise for the show and Season 1’s cliffhanger ending definitely suggest the order could be coming.

In an interview with Deadline, creator Andy Siara definitely seemed open to and already has ideas for a second season. He said he intentionally made Baltasar’s end mysterious and explains that those questions could be answered in a potential Season 2.

“The important thing to me was to close out the emotional arc of this season and these characters. I feel like Emma, Noah, Luna, Baltasar, Sam, Violet and Murray — like, the core seven there —all of their arcs are complete,” Siara told the publication. “They were all trying to recapture a feeling of their past, in a way, and they’re all on different degrees of commitment to that. Then, the final four that are going in there — Baltasar, Murray, Noah, Emma — they’re the ones that are most committed for their own reasons, but by the end, I feel like those are all complete.”

“So, I have ideas for a second season, for sure,” he continued. “But I look at it more like a sequel to a movie. Now that this has all happened, how do we take this forward, rather than continuing these same emotional arcs? As for will there be a second season, that’s up to Peacock. If they want one, I’m all for it, obviously. But we will see, so give them a call.”
