New Movies + Shows To Watch This Weekend: Netflix’s ‘The Sandman’ + More

Exit light, enter night, that’s what I always say. At least, it’s what I’ve been thinking all week because Netflix’s The Sandman is finally here, and I can’t hear the name “Sandman” without thinking of Metallica. Tell me I’m not the only one?

There are dozens of new titles available this week in addition to the screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s wildly successful comic. Over on Amazon Prime Video, Ron Howard brings to life the harrowing true rescue of a group of trapped soccer players in Thailand in Thirteen Lives, and on Apple TV+, the animated film Luck, which features the voices of Simon Pegg, Jane Fonda, and Eva Noblezada, is sure to be a hit with the whole family.

Whether you want a new movie, or new seasons of your favorite shows, let us here at Decider help you figure out what to watch this weekend and where to stream it.

New Movies and Shows to Stream This Weekend: The Sandman, Thirteen Lives, Luck + More

The Sandman TV series has been over 30 years in the making; the series creator, Neil Gaiman even revealed that the casting process “had to have been one of the longest audition periods of a casting that any human being has ever experienced.” With that much time and effort put into such beloved source material, we’re all hoping that the screen version, premiering today on Netflix, lives up to the books. Over on Amazon Prime Video, Ron Howard has adapted a riveting story to the screen as well, this one a true tale of survival. In 2018, several members of a boys’ soccer team became trapped in a Thai cave, and their story, along with the story of their rescuers, is told in Thirteen Lives. And Skydance Animation is releasing its latest film, Luck, about an unlucky girl named Sam who stumbles into the world of good and bad luck and meets some magical creatures who change her life.

New on Netflix August 5: The Sandman

The Sandman was one of author Neil Gaiman’s first hugely successful works (in the time since the comic’s 1989 debut, he worked on dozens of projects, including Stardust, Good Omens, and American Gods, all of which have been adapted successfully for the screen). But The Sandman has been the one many steadfast fans have been waiting for. The series stars Tom Sturridge as Dream (also known as Morpheus), and follows him after he is released from a 106-year imprisonment and seeks to right the wrongs of the Dreaming, the realm in which he lives. The 10-episode series, which comes out Friday, co-stars Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

New on Amazon Prime Video August 5: Thirteen Lives

In 2018, several members of a youth soccer team in Thailand, along with their coach, became trapped in a cave they were exploring when sudden, heavy rains flooded the area and blocked the entrance. Their harrowing rescue took weeks, involved thousands of experts from across the globe who eventually were able to extract them from the cave. Their story has been brought to life by director Ron Howard in Thirteen Lives, which stars Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, and Viggo Mortensen as the core group of men who were essential to the rescue.

New on Apple TV+ August 5: Luck

Luck the movie has had some weird luck of its own in the run-up to its release on Apple TV+ this weekend, the film has been pushed back a few times, from a February 2022 release, and also due to some casting changes early on in production. The cast is pretty stellar though, newcomer Eva Noblezada plays the lead, Sam, a girl who discovers that the lands of Good Luck and Bad Luck exist and there are magical creatures that can help change a person’s luck. Some of the creatures include Simon Pegg as a cat named Bob, Jane Fonda as a dragon, and John Ratzenberger as the mayor of Bad Luck. (If the premise sounds like a Pixar film, and the inclusion of John Ratzenberger also sounds like a very Pixar move, that would be because Luck is a production of Skydance Animation, the company run by former Pixar head John Lasseter.) Luck premieres this Friday on Apple TV+.
