Where was ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 Filmed?

As of today, one of Netflix’s most popular original series is back and everyone is buzzing about it. After being away from Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Will (Noah Schnapp), Joyce (Winona Ryder), Hopper (David Harbour), and the rest of the main gang for nearly three years, Stranger Things is back for its fourth season.

Stranger Things Season 4 picks up with the characters six months after the horrific and deadly Battle of Starcourt, and things have changed for everyone. Eleven and the Byers have moved halfway across the country to California to get a fresh start, while Mike, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Max (Sadie Sink) are still in Hawkins, and Hopper is imprisoned in Russia. In addition to the kids’ stress of being separated from one another, they’re also just beginning to deal with the anxiety and changes that come with starting high school, when a brand new supernatural threat presents itself, and with it, a mystery whose solution has the capacity to finally put an end to the Upside Down.

Clearly, this season is massive in its scope and scale, and with so much going on and our heroes all spread out, many fans are wondering where the sci-fi horror-drama series was actually shot. Here’s everything you need to know about Stranger Things Season 4’s filming locations.

Where is Stranger Things Season 4 set?

As we touched on above, Stranger Things Season 4 is all over the map. Joyce has taken her sons Will and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) as well as Eleven with her in a move to sunny Southern California in the wake of Eleven losing her telekinetic powers and all of the trauma Will went through back in Hawkins. Hopper, meanwhile, turned out to be alive after seemingly disintegrating attempting to save Eleven in the Season 3 finale, but his current reality is looking grim, as he seems to be imprisoned deep in Russian territory.

Everyone else is back in the familiar fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, where new sets and sights come by way of the kids beginning high school.

Where was Stranger Things Season 4 filmed?

We already know that Hawkins isn’t a real place, and so scenes taking place there were shot in Atlanta, Georgia, just as they were for the previous three seasons, as well. When it comes to the California and Russia scenes though, that’s where things get interesting.

The California-set scenes where actually filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, while the Russia scenes were shot in Vilnius, Lithuania. The scenes that take place at Eleven and Will’s fictional Californian Lenora Hills High School were actually filmed at Albuquerque’s Eldorado High School, while other California moments were captured at Albuquerque’s Roller King skating rink, as well as in and around Los Lunas, New Mexico.

And for that added Eastern European incarceration authenticity, Hopper’s jail scenes were shot in Lithuania’s centuries old (though no longer in operational) Lukiškes Prison, while the other Russia scenes were shot in and around a wintery Vilnius.

Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
