Mike Hagerty Dies: ‘Friends,’ ‘Curb’ Actor Was 67

Mike Hagerty, an actor known for his work on Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm and more recently, Somebody Somewhere, has died. He was 67.

Hagerty’s Somebody Somewhere costar Bridget Everett shared the news of his death on Instagram on Friday, where she posted a photo of the late actor with the caption, “With great sadness, the family of Michael G. Hagerty announced his death yesterday in Los Angeles. A beloved character actor, his love of his hometown of Chicago and his family were the cornerstones of his life.”

The caption continued, “Mike, a devoted husband, is survived by his wife Mary Kathryn, his sister Mary Ann Hagerty, her wife Kathleen O’Rourke, and their daughter Meg. He will be sorely missed.”

Everett shared a second Instagram with photos of herself and Hagerty working on their HBO series together. Alongside the photos, she wrote, “I loved Mike the instant i met him. He was so special. Warm, funny, never met a stranger. We are devastated he has passed. Mike was adored by the entire cast and crew of Somebody Somewhere. Our thoughts are with his wife and family.”

Hagerty was born in Chicago and started his comedy career with Second City, Vulture reports. He booked multiple TV roles in the 1980s, including stints in Cheers, Crime Story, Married…With Children, Family Ties and Murphy Brown. He went on to appear in The Wonder Years, Martin and The Building, as well as Seinfeld, The George Carlin Show and Friends. In recent years, he acted in Shameless and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. 

While Hagerty had a prolific career in television, he also appeared in multiple films, including Wayne’s World, Speed 2: Cruise Control and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.

HBO — the network behind Curb Your Enthusiasm and Somebody Somewhere — addressed Hagerty’s death in a statement, per Deadline: “We are very saddened to hear about the sudden passing of Mike Hagerty. A member of the HBO family for many years, his most recent role as Bridget Everett’s father in Somebody Somewhere showed his special talent for bringing heart to a performance.”

HBO continued, “Mike was a joy to work with and brought warmth and kindness to all who knew him. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends.”
