How Did Made for Love Season 1 End?

It’s been a year since we last saw Hazel and Byron (Billy Magnussen) Gogl, so that means it’s time for a refresher. Spoilers ahead.

When we first met Hazel, she lacked any sort of agency. She lived in a virtual world created by Byron, was told what to dress and eat, and couldn’t talk to anyone who wasn’t her husband in her marble prison. The man even designed a program to track her orgasms. But after 10 soulless years, Hazel finally escaped her own personal hell by leaving the Hub and fleeing to her dad Herbert’s (Ray Romano) house. For much of Season 1, it seemed that Hazel was on the path to freedom. She tortured Byron through his tracking device, came up with a plan to get the chip in her head removed, and even had a fling. Her hookup with Sarunas J. Jackson’s Jay was one of the hottest parts of last season. So when Hazel met with Byron to sign their divorce papers, it seemed like her nightmare was finally over.

But of course it wasn’t. Before he signed, Byron told Hazel the truth about her father. Herbert had been diagnosed with cancer and instead of treating it, he was just taking medicine to manage his pain. Byron then offered her a deeply messed up choice: Hazel could divorce him or they could stay together so that Byron and his team could cure her dad’s cancer. Even though Hazel has always had problems with her dad and his drinking, she’s not a monster. She took Byron’s deal on the condition that she would leave the second her dad was cured. Season 1 ended with Hazel and Byron covertly moving Herbert to the Hub and painstakingly recreating his house. Herbert is going to be treated for cancer whether he knows and likes it or not.
