Will There Be a ‘Malignant 2’? What We Know About A Possible Sequel

It’s time to say goodbye to summer and hello to scary movies; like, for example, Malignant, which is now playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.

Directed by James Wan, the creator of The Conjuring Universe, Malignant is a new original supernatural horror film starring Annabelle Wallis as a woman named Madison, who, after a confrontation with her abusive husband, begins seeing disturbing visions of people being murdered. Those visions, of course, turn out to be real—and then the real horror begins.

There’s a lot more to the Malignant plot than that, but I won’t spoil your viewing experience. And those who know director James Wan—who also co-created the Saw and Insidious franchises with Leigh Whannell, in addition to creating the Conjuring universe—know that he rarely passes up the chance for a sequel.

So will there be a Malignant sequel? Here’s what we know.

IS THERE A MALIGNANT END CREDITS SCENE?

No. There is no Malignant after-credits scene, nor is there a mid-credits scene. That said, the final shot of the film includes a lamp buzzing with electricity—the Big Bad in Malignant is able to control electricity—which could hint that the story is not over yet.

WILL THERE BE A MALIGNANT 2?

There are no official plans for a Malignant sequel just yet, but you shouldn’t rule out the possibility of a Malignant 2.

In an interview with GamesRadar.com, Wan was not against the idea of turning Malignant into a franchise but also said that was not his intention. He also made it clear that the decision was up to the studio, not to him.

“It’s kind of a tricky question,” he said. “Ultimately anything can become a franchise. They will find a way. Look at Saw. When Leigh Whannell and I made Saw, we were like, ‘Jigsaw gets up and he shuts the door. The end.’ Then when the movie did so well, the producers and studio were like, ‘Guys, we have to make another one.’” He concluded, “So, yes, Malignant could become a franchise. But I set out to just make this movie.”

Whether or not Warner Bros. decides to turn Malignant into a franchise likely depends on how well the film does in theaters and on HBO Max. We’ll just have to wait and see!
