Mary Trump Roasts Meghan McCain For Disappearing on ‘The View: “Didn’t Have the Courage to Come On”

If you tuned in for today’s episode of The View and wondered why Meghan McCain disappeared around the halfway point, you’re not alone. Amidst her final week as a co-host of the ABC talk show, McCain stepped out for the show’s big interview with guest Mary Trump — who was critical of her departure.

McCain spent the first half of the episode tearing into comedian Kathy Griffin, who had just announced her battle with addiction and lung cancer diagnosis. After likening Griffin to ISIS and denouncing her for jokes about Clay Aiken’s sexuality, McCain dipped from the episode.

“I don’t like her, I’m never going to like her for all the jokes she made about Clay,” McCain said, then referencing Griffin’s divisive photo with Donald Trump’s severed head: “And I don’t like her because I don’t like seeing severed heads of anyone, any place, because it reminds me of what ISIS does to our soldiers.”

The controversial statement was one of her last on today’s episode of the show, as she was nowhere to be found when the former president’s niece, Mary Trump, arrived to promote her new book The Reckoning. Mary Trump noticed her absence, waiting until the very end of the interview to call out the co-host.

Mary Trump slammed Donald Trump and his Republican allies before hammering into McCain, denouncing their “big lie” surrounding this year’s insurrection and highlighting the massive death count thanks to his mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic.

“One thing Donald proved is that using racism as a platform was successful, and I think that’s why we see so much strife in this country,” she continued. “And we need to continue having the kinds of conversations about race and gender that you have.”

The last time Mary Trump appeared on The View in July of 2020, she had a bitter argument with McCain over her book; McCain accused Trump of cashing in on her famous family with a misleading depiction of them. And today, apparently, McCain was not ready to fight that battle all over again.

“It’s a shame that your colleague didn’t have the courage to come on and have this conversation with me,” Mary Trump continued, making it pretty clear who she was referencing. “But I appreciate that you were all willing to take up these very difficult subjects because racism, in my view, is at the heart of everything that’s wrong in 21st century America.”

There was a bit of an awkward pause as the co-hosts registered Mary Trump’s comment, but moderator Whoopi Goldberg got the show back running by tossing the segment to commercial. What a way for McCain to begin her last week!
