John Lithgow Returning As Trinity Killer in ‘Dexter’ Reboot

Some people thought Dexter‘s finale was ridiculous. Some, like this viewer, prefer to imagine Dexter ended after season 4. Both of us might take solace in this news, then: John Lithgow will return for the Showtime series “reboot” as the Trinity Killer.

Deadline reports that the limited series return of Dexter (aka a 10-episode ninth season) has written the Trinity Killer back into the plot, with Lithgow’s scenes only requiring a day or two of filming in the next week or two in Los Angeles.

Lithgow won the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for playing serial killer Arthur Mitchell, and followed it up later that year with the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. Of course, Dexter Morgan killed Lithgow’s character in the Season 4 finale (but not before Arthur had claimed one final victim himself in Rita).

The good news for those of us who do wish the series ended after Season 4, this new revival of Dexter will be showrun by Clyde Phillips, the man responsible for the series’ glory days. Phillips initially came in to revamp the pilot, and then stayed on as showrunner for four seasons. He left for the final four, and though Phillips’ continuation will reportedly not ignore the “I’m a lumberjack and I’m okay” twist in the original series finale, fingers crossed the writer can return the show to some of its former blood-soaked luster.

How Phillips and company will resurrect the Trinity Killer, though, is anyone’s guess. Flashback? Dream sequence? We’ll just have to snap on some latex gloves and find out.
