Two long-awaited animated features are finally coming to VOD this weekend, and it’s about time. Batman: The Long Halloween, Part 1, which features Naya Rivera in her final film role playing Catwoman, is based on the mid-1990s comic book series with a devoted fan base that has waited over 20 years for this particular story to come to life. (And as the name suggests, this is indeed just the first part of the story, fans will be able to watch part 2 on July 27th when it’s released straight to VOD too.) Similarly, Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train, based on the beloved manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, is finally available to American audiences. But these animated features aren’t the only things that are new on VOD this week.

Just in case you’re looking for, in the immortal words of Lucille Bluth, “a nice little scare,” The Unholy, which is produced by Sam Raimi, stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Cary Elwes, and William Sadler in the film adaptation of the james Herbert novel Shrine. The Unholy tells the story of a young girl named Alice (Cricket Brown) who was once deaf and mute, but claims that the Virgin Mary has cured her and she can now speak. Only it wasn’t the Virgin Mary, it was a long-dead relative of Alice’s who sold her soul to the devil and now appears to perform “miracles” on people like Alice in exchange for their loyalty to Satan. I mean! If you love a good story about demons, devils, and scary church stuff I think you’re in for a treat.

Batman: The Long Halloween, Part 1

Based on the Batman comic written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Tim Sale, Jensen Ackles plays Batman in this feature-length cartoon that covers Batman’s early years as he hunts a serial killer named Holiday who strikes once a month on national holidays. The film also stars Josh Duhamel as Harvey Dent, Troy Baker as the Joker, and Naya Rivera in her final role playing Selina Kyle/Catwoman. Despite being an animated film, it’s rated PG-13 for its depictions of violence and language. Parents, be warned.

Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba: The Movie is the first feature length film based on Koyoharu Gotōge’s manga series of the same name. The animated TV series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba has been wildly successful in Japan and the film was released there back in 2020. This is the first chance for American audiences to watch the story of Tanjiro Kamado and his fellow Demon Slayers as they board the mysterious Mugen Train, on which passengers keep disappearing. As Tanjiro investigates the disappearances, be must fight off the evil villains who are trying to stop him.
