Meghan McCain is voicing her support for law enforcement on this morning’s episode of The View. As Pride Month kicks off with a ban of uniformed police officers from New York City Pride events, McCain spoke out against the ban — proposed by organizers in response to police’s history of targeting the queer community — which she deemed” ridiculous” and “counterproductive.”
After pointing out that officers put their lives “on the line” to “go into situations that all of us flee from,” McCain turned the focus to her own personal connection to law enforcement, telling her co-hosts “no one that I know is happy about what has gone on” in the past year with police and community relations. “If anything, they want to help reform, they are proud of what they do, they want to go forward,” McCain said.
The ban, she argued, makes officers “feel shame … while going to an event that is celebrating pride.” She added, “That to me is a complete disassociation from things. You can’t ask someone to choose between these two things.”
McCain warned of a “slippery slope,” suggesting members of the armed forces could be banned from wearing their uniforms. “It took a really long time from a lot of advocates, including people like my brother, who were fighting in wars alongside members of LGBTQ people in uniform for them to get Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell repealed,” she said.
While McCain strongly opposed the ban, Sunny Hostin had a different take, telling The View panel, “It’s a nuanced and complicated issue,” but adding, “I understand where they’re coming from in enacting this ban and not reversing it.”
Last month, Pride march organizers first announced that the NYPD could not participate in the annual march as a group, a ban that will last for at least four years. David A. Correa, the interim executive director at Heritage of Pride, Inc., said police uniforms are “part of the trauma and triggers that our community faces,” per ABC News. He added, “To be fully inclusive, you have to make the space safe for everyone. And that sometimes means compromise, and Black and brown people and indigenous people have been compromising for centuries.”
