Mare of Easttown may have ended this past weekend, but the fan discussions, awards hype, and more have prevailed. In a recent interview with the New York Times, series lead Kate Winslet opened up about her experiences with a sex scene on the show. The scene, which also featured Guy Pearce‘s character, included “a bulgy bit of belly” that director Craig Zobel said he’d cut from the show. But Winslet retaliated.
“Dont you dare!” she told the director, explaining that it was all part of bringing Mare Sheehan to life. Winslet also sent back two of the promo posters, claiming they were too retouched for the character she had in mind.
“They were like ‘Kate, really, you can’t,'” Winslet said, “and I’m like ‘Guys, I know how many lines I have by the side of my eye, please put them all back.'”
The zeitgeisty HBO Max series starred the British actress as Mare, a washed-up detective in Easttown, Pennsylvania investigating a murder case and reckoning with her past. Winslet told the Times that she’s aware of audiences noticing how “unglamorous” she appears. She described the character as a “wildly flawed, messy, broken, fragmented, difficult woman.”
“I loved her marks and her scars and her faults and her flaws and the fact that she has no off switch, no stop button,” Winslet said. “She just knows ‘Go.'”
Winslet also discussed playing an older woman on screen, grappling with themes of ageism and sexism in the industry.
“Listen, I hope that in playing Mare as a middle-aged woman — I will be 46 in October — I guess that’s why people have connected with this character in the way that they have done because there are clearly no filters,” Winslet said.
The look came down to little details like lighting that made her skin a little less luminous, “unflattering” jeans and flannels, and shoddy eyebrow filling.
“She’s a fully functioning, flawed woman with a body and a face that moves in a way that is synonymous with her age and her life and where she comes from,” Winslet said. “I think we’re starved of that a bit.”
