Will There Be a ‘Cruella’ Sequel Starring Emma Stone?

If you just finished Cruella on Disney+ (or just got back from the movie theater) and are dying to find out what happens next to Cruella de Vil, boy do I have some great movie recommendations for you.

But in all seriousness, despite the fact that Cruella acts as a prequel to both the 1961 animated film One Hundred and One Dalmatians, and the 1996 live-action film 101 Dalmatians, it also operates as a sort of reboot film for the franchise. After all, Emma Stone’s version of Cruella de Vil is a working-class, punk-rock orphan living in London in the 1970s. She’s not exactly the stuffy, old, rich, evil woman obsessed with fur coats that you may remember from your childhood.

Beyond that, (spoiler alert!) the Cruella end credits scene implies that those dogs you love so much from 101 Dalmatians—Pongo and Perdy—were actually gifts from Cruella. She left them as apologies on the doorsteps of Roger Dearly and Anita Darling, who in this film are played by Kayvan Novak and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

So if you’ve come to the internet asking: “Will there be a Cruella sequel?” I forgive you. It’s kind of a silly question to ask about a prequel. But also, I get it. Here’s what we know about the possibility of another Cruella movie in the Emma Stone Cruella universe.

Will there be a Cruella 2? Is Disney making a Cruella sequel?

There is no official word yet on a Cruella sequel starring Emma Stone, or indeed any other actor as Cruella de Vil. However, it sounds like director Craig Gillepsie and at least some of the cast are on board for a sequel, if Disney were to give them the green light.

In an interview with Forbes, Gillepsie said, “We talked maybe the fantasy of doing another Cruella because we all had so much fun together. I’d be happy with that. I feel like we were able to crack the code on this, what its tone was, and with the characters, there was this evolution of self-discovery for everyone. We’ll see.”

Stone may have competition for the role if a Cruella sequel does happen because Glenn Close—who played the villain in the 1996 live-action film 101 Dalmatians—recently told Variety that she has her own ideas for a Cruella de Vil sequel. “I have a great story to make another Cruella with my Cruella,” Close said. “Cruella comes to New York and disappears down the sewers.”

It’s hard to say whether Disney will see a Cruella sequel as worth the money. Cruella‘s budget is reportedly in the $200 million range. The film is opening in theaters, and more people are going back to the movies as they get vaccinated. The film will also be streaming on Disney+ Premier Access for $30 for those who don’t want to risk a theater, a high price tag that will no doubt make a nice chunk of change for Disney, as well as drive Disney+ subscriptions. On the other hand, Cruella will be free on Disney+ in three months, so some viewers may decide to wait.

As Gillepsie said: “We’ll see.”
