‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ to Stream Free on YouTube for 48 Hours

Now’s your chance to catch The Trial of the Chicago 7 if you’ve been holding out on streaming the Aaron Sorkin drama. Netflix announced today that they’re making Sorkin’s ’60s protest film free to watch for 48 hours in honor of the 51st anniversary of the trial verdict depicted in the movie.

In a blog post for Netflix, Sorkin shared that he and the streamer are releasing the film to commemorate the anniversary of the verdict and to remember “the real patriots who inspired a generation – actually, generations – to take to the streets and uphold the foundations of our US Constitution, along with the courageous voices that continue to do so today. It’s our honor to share their story with the world.”

The Trial of the Chicago 7 first premiered on Netflix this fall. The historical drama depicts the real events of 1968, when peaceful anti-war protestors came to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and were met with a strong police presence and later charged for inciting riots. The drama stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, John Carroll Lynch, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Alex Sharp and Jeremy Strong.

The film, which has emerged as frontrunner this awards season, has already snagged five Golden Globe nominations and three SAG Award nominations. In her The Trial of the Chicago 7 review, Decider’s Anna Menta praised the film as Sorkin “at his very best,” writing, “By the end of two hours and nine minutes, Sorkin has ensured that you not only understand the case of the Chicago 7 (also called the Chicago 8, until Seale was eventually dismissed), but that you feel a deep connection with, if not all, at least most of them. It almost goes without saying that, as protestors across the nation are being arrested under President Trump, this story is a particularly relevant one.”

You can find The Trial of the Chicago 7 for free on the Netflix YouTube channel starting tomorrow, Feb. 19 at 12 AM PT. You don’t need a subscription or YouTube account to access the film, and you can watch it as many times as you’d like before it’s removed February 20 at 11:59 PM PT. After that, you’ll still be able to watch The Trial of the Chicago 7 at its permanent home on Netflix.
