7 Shows Like ‘Are You The One?’ On Netflix

There is no such thing as a guilty pleasure. Let’s face it, your reality TV addiction doesn’t hurt anyone… so it’s just a plain “pleasure,” right? If anyone tries to shame you for deriving pure, utter joy from watching relationships implode on your little screen, tell them Dr. Nabi says you deserve it. “We have this cultural value of media consumption being edifying, and that what we do should be about growing and achieving,” Dr. Nabi says, “we don’t focus as much on relaxation and enjoyment.” Now that you have permission to watch all the (formerly) trashy reality dating shows your heart desires guilt-free, where should you start?

You can start introducing more pleasure — and chaos — into your life with Are You The One?. The MTV creation dubs itself “the most ambitious matchmaking experiment ever attempted” and matches couples based on a mathematical algorithm. Contestants have 10 chances to leave as 10 perfect matches, but love is not their only award. If they pair off successfully, the 20 contestants — 10 boys, 10 girls — also get to take home the largest cash prize in MTV history. They have to split it, but still that’s about 50k each. After Season 1, the show even brought on all sexually fluid contestants, so contestants had nearly double the potential matches. This makes it extra fun, considering everyone on the show sleeps in one giant bed.

Despite being created back in 2014, Are You The One? is all the rage right now after coming to Netflix last December. Sadly, only the first two seasons of the show are on the streaming platform. Luckily, there are plenty of similar shows to soothe your reality romance withdrawals. Here’s a list of what to watch when you finish Are You the One?

1

'Married at First Sight'

Married at First Sight is first on the list of absurdly addictive experimental dating shows. In perhaps the most insane love “experiment” on television, the show utilizes expert matchmakers to pair contestants. The kicker — the couple meets for the first time at the wedding. Literally mid-walk down the aisle. You’ve heard of love at first sight, but this is leagues beyond. The best part is seeing their families, particularly parents, mingle before the reception and try to glean information about their child’s mystery spouse. If the couple decides to tie the knot upon seeing each other for the first time, they promptly jet off on their honeymoon and move in together. The experiment spans around six weeks, at which point each contestant must decide whether to stay with their spouse or file for divorce.

'Love Is Blind'

Love Is Blind is slightly less bonkers than Married at First Sight, but it’s just as enjoyable to watch. The premise: contestants get to know one another in “pods,” the objective being to get to know one another by conversation alone. While they can’t see each other, they can hear through the pod walls and are encouraged to ask intimate questions to foster a bond. The couples who agree to a blind engagement in the pods proceed to meet each other in person at the proposal. Love Is Blind lives up to its competition and includes a crucial tropical element. Each contestant embarks on a luxurious pre-wedding vacay with their fiancé to put a face to the voice they have gotten to know and love. The season leads up to the final episode, where contestants can choose to follow through with their wedding or leave their partner at the altar forever.

'Temptation Island'

Based on the Dutch show Blind Faith, Temptation Island is more of a match-destroying show than a matchmaking one. Couples, who have often been together for years, go on the show to test the strength of their relationship. Each person lives separately from their partner, with a dozen or so singles of the opposite sex. The singles are specifically designed to destabilize the existing couples, who are already at a crossroads before coming on the show. The couples cannot see each other until the season is over, when they are informed of their partner’s behavior and must decide whether to stay in their relationship or pursue someone they met on the island.

'Too Hot to Handle'

Too Hot to Handle follows a group of singles who think they are embarking on a journey to meet other hot commodities. Upon arrival, they’re blindsided by the news that while their fellow contestants are hot indeed, they aren’t allowed to engage in sexual activity of any kind, including kissing. The punishment? For a mere graze, a prescribed amount is deducted from the overall prize money. Choosing between sex and money may be agonizing for the contestants, but the goal of the show is to “build deeper emotional connections.” We’ll see how that works out.

'Love Island'

Ah, a classic. Love Island, which first aired in the UK, is similar to Are You The One? in its musical chairs-style set up. Islanders must couple up each week to avoid elimination and remain in the running for the $100,000 cash prize awarded to the last couple standing. Any unpaired contestants must vacate the island. Viewers can also “vote” via the Love Island app for their top couples, forcing unpopular couples home as well.

You can marry for love, lust, or even citizenship. The American K-1 visa, which grants citizenship to spouses of American citizens, is a reality show too! 90 Day Fiancé follows couples who have already submitted documentation for their visas and have a 90 day grace period in which to marry one another. The franchise famously has way too many spinoffs, including 90 Day Fiancé: Self-Quarantined, a five-episode limited series starring 40 of the contestants from previous seasons. They filmed themselves in self-isolation at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown.
