Those familiar with the August Wilson play will know that Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is emotional, tragic, and heart-wrenching tale all on its own. Add in that it’s the final performance for the late Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman—who died of colon cancer in August, having kept his diagnosis a secret—and it becomes very difficult to watch indeed. But this adaption, which was directed George C. Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, is also incredibly moving.
Viola Davis stars as the real-life 20s blues singer Ma Rainey, who has been invited to record an album in Chicago with her band. When the star is running late, tensions begin to rise between the veteran band members (played by Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, and Michael Potts) and the young, hot-headed trumpet player named Levee (Boseman). But the real enemy for all of them is the white producers, who don’t disguise their desire to exploit these musicians to the point of theft.
