Woman Crush Wednesday: We’re Raising a Glass to ‘On the Rocks’ Star Jessica Henwick

In the spirit of Halloween, we’re serving up a sweet treat for you today in the form of a brand new Woman Crush Wednesday! That’s right, prepare to read about an actress so impressive that by the end of this article you may just find yourself bingeing her television and film work just as hard as you’ll be bingeing candy this Halloween season (I mean, if kids aren’t Trick-or-Treating like usual, there’s gonna be a lot of extra stuff on the shelves, right? You’re merely taking one for the team by gorging every KitKat in sight. But I digress). So, without further ado, give it up for an incredibly talented woman who has done great work over the past decade and is sure to continue to do so for many more, your WCW, Jessica Henwick!

WHO’S THAT GAL: Jessica Henwick

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Henwick plays Fiona in upcoming Sofia Coppola film On the Rocks, which will be released on Apple TV+ this Friday on October 23rd. In this comedy-drama, a happily married New York mother, Laura (Rashida Jones), begins to suspect that her husband Dean (Marlon Wayans) is having an affair. She enlists her dad Felix (Bill Murray) to help her investigate, leading to a series of adventures in the city. Henwick’s Fiona is an attractive young co-worker of Dean who is Laura’s main suspect in this potential affair.

On the Rocks is already garnering plenty of critical acclaim and positive reviews from sources like Rolling StoneThe New York Times, and The Guardian, in addition to earning an 87% Certified Fresh approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an overall averaged score of 73 on Metacritic. See what all of the hype is about by checking out Henwick and the rest of the cast’s wonderful work in On the Rocks this week!

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Henwick’s professional onscreen career began with her 2009 film debut as an uncredited role in adventure comedy St Trinian’s 2: The Legend of Fritton’s Gold. Just a year later, the actress had her television debut, starring as Bo in BBC children adventure series Spirit Warriors. Things quickly took off for Henwick from there, as she went on to have guest or recurring roles in television series like BBC comedy The Thick of It in 2012, and Investigation Discovery drama Obsession: Dark Desires, BBC drama Silk, and ITV detective drama Lewis all in 2014 before getting a big break on the smash hit and multi-Emmy Award winning  HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, in which she played Nymeria Sand, one of Prince Oberyn Martell’s (Pedro Pascal) eight illegitimate daughters, in eight episodes spanning from 2015 to 2017.

Henwick continued to have both small one-off roles in shows like Sky Atlantic psychological thriller Fortitude in 2017 and Netflix superhero drama Luke Cage in 2018, as well as recurring main roles in shows like Netflix superhero action drama Iron Fist from 2017 to 2018 and Netflix crossover superhero drama miniseries The Defenders in 2017 (she played martial artist Colleen Wing in all three of the aforementioned MCU titles).

Henwick has also had great success on the big screen throughout her career, including the role of Jessika Pava in 2015 epic space opera blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Fun Fact: she was in the running for the role of Rey and even spent a grueling six months auditioning for the part! No matter what, after coming out on the other side of a process like that, we sure think she’s one with the Force), Aiko Koo in 2016 horror-thriller The Head Hunter, Joanne in 2017 romantic drama Newness, Emily Haversham in 2020 Kristen Stewart-led sci-fi horror Underwater, and Aimee in 2020 post-apocalyptic adventure Love and Monsters alongside Dylan O’Brien. Henwick has also had impressive experiences with short films, including 2016 thriller The Heart of the Forest and 2019 thriller Baliko, both of which she notably starred in, wrote, and produced. With rich and diverse roles like these and many more, Henwick has already built quite a name for herself in the business and is set to only continue to dazzle us in years to come.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: You don’t have to wait too much longer to see more of Henwick, because the actress already has three projects on the way. First up, she’ll be voicing Alexia, one of the lead roles in Netflix animated adventure fantasy series Blood of Zeus, which tells the tale of Heron, a commoner living in ancient Greece who discovers his true heritage as a son of Zeus, and his purpose: to save the world from a demonic army. Secondly, she has a currently unknown role in 2021 star-studded sci-fi thriller Godzilla vs. Kong, the epic next chapter in the cinematic Monsterverse pits two of the greatest icons in motion picture history against one another – the fearsome Godzilla and the mighty Kong – with humanity caught in the balance. And finally, if you wait just a little longer, you can catch her in highly-anticipated late 2021 (or possibly early 2022) action sci-fi film The Matrix 4.  For even more from Henwick in the meantime, you can follow her on Twitter and Instagram.
