Simon Cowell to Miss ‘AGT’ After Breaking His Back in Bike Accident

Simon Cowell will miss America’s Got Talent‘s first two live shows as he recovers from a bike accident. According to Deadline, the television personality broke his back in multiple places while riding an electric bike over the weekend.

On Saturday afternoon, Cowell injured himself while testing his new electric bike at his Malibu, California home. A representative for the America’s Got Talent judge revealed that he has “broken his back in a number of places” and underwent a five-hour surgery that evening to repair his back. Cowell is now “under observation and is doing fine,” said his rep.

Due to Cowell’s recovery timeline, the veteran judge and executive producer will miss the first live shows of America’s Got Talent Season 15, which are scheduled to air on Tuesday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 12. The NBC competition show is currently taping in the studio without an audience, and contestants are appearing via live performances.

On Sunday, Cowell spoke out for the first time since his accident to share an update with fans. “Some good advice…  if you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time,” he tweeted. “I have broken part of my back. Thank you everyone for your kind messages.”

The notoriously grumpy Cowell went on to give a shout out to the medical staff who have treated him over the past few days. “A massive thank you to all the nurses and doctors. Some of the nicest people I have ever met,” he wrote. “Stay safe everyone.”

Cowell has yet to announce whether he will return after this week, but knowing him, he’ll be back. Nothing can keep Simon Cowell away from AGT‘s final rounds.

America’s Got Talent airs every Tuesday and Wednesday at 8/7c on NBC.
