‘Moesha’ on Netflix Dominates Twitter: “I Literally Stayed Up All Night Watching”

Almost 20 years after it went off the air, Moesha is back and better than ever. On Saturday, August 1, Moesha hit Netflix, and the beloved comedy quickly shot into the platform’s Top 10 list. But Moesha‘s dominance didn’t end there: the UPN sitcom was a top Twitter trend for much of the weekend, with thousands of viewers chiming in to share their thoughts about the show’s many cameos, quirky outfits, and relatable themes. As more than one fan wrote, “I literally stayed up all night watching Moesha on Netflix.”

Over the weekend, Moesha landed on Netflix as part of the streaming giant’s new deal for seven classic Black sitcoms, including Sister, SisterGirlfriendsThe Parkers, and more. The sitcoms will hit Netflix at various times over the next few months, but Moesha was the first — and viewers welcomed the premiere accordingly. Multiple Twitter users joked that they stayed up until 3 a.m. to watch Moesha right when it hit Netflix, an experience that resonated with fans who grew up watching the show at odd hours.

Other Twitter users praised Moesha‘s absolute bop of a theme song, Brandy Norwood’s breakout performance, and the many, many cameos, including the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant. The Lakers star appeared in Moesha in a September 1996 episode that aired just a few months before his NBA debut; in it, Bryant plays a student who is tutored by Moesha as he prepares to re-take his SATs.

Many fans also paid tribute to Moesha stars Lamont Bentley, who played Hakeem Campbell, and Yvette Wilson (Andell Wilkerson), who passed away in 2005 and 2012, respectively. “Currently watching the pilot for Moesha and having an internal moment of silence for Lamont Bentley, Yvette Wilson, and [recurring actor] Merlin Santana,” wrote one user. “Watching Moesha gives me chills sometimes. So many ppl on that show have passed,” added another.

All six seasons of Moesha are currently streaming on Netflix. What are you waiting for?
