‘The Morning Show’ Season 2 is Getting a Coronavirus Rewrite

Apple TV+ drama The Morning Show is once again stepping up to tackle real-world events. According to star Mark Duplass, the Emmy-nominated series is currently being rewritten to address the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Duplass, who was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the 2020 Emmy nominations, told Deadline that The Morning Show Season 2 filmed two episodes before production was shut down, but now, the season will be reworked to include the “larger, global phenomenon” that has redefined the media landscape.

THE MORNING SHOW EMMYS NOMINATIONS: SNUBS OR SURPRISES?

Yesterday’s 2020 Emmy nominations were filled with more than a few surprises, and The Morning Show‘s dominance was certainly among them. With its eight total nominations, the drama series emerged as a winner for Apple TV+, which launched just six months ago. The series nabbed nominations in key acting categories, including Lead Actor in a Drama for Steve Carell, Lead Actress for Jennifer Aniston, and Supporting Actor for Duplass and Billy Crudup.

However, the series was also snubbed in two major categories. Reese Witherspoon, Aniston’s co-star, was shut out from the nominations altogether despite high-profile roles in The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere, and Big Little Lies Season 2, and the series, for all of its success, was ignored in the Outstanding Drama Series race.

“I’m bummed about Reese, I’m bummed about Karen Pittman, I’m bummed about Gugu [Mbatha-Raw] and I’m bummed about Desean Terry,” Duplass told Deadline shortly after the nominees were announced. “I’m bummed about all of my scene partners. They all put in great performances. Some of them are flashier and some of them talked more for certain reasons, and I know it sounds cliché, but the truth is, to single them out is sort of a crazy process.”

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE MORNING SHOW SEASON 2?

Despite the disappointment, Duplass is excited about The Morning Show Season 2 — even the impending rewrites. “We shot two episodes before we shut down due to the pandemic,” he told Deadline. “I know that they’re also rewriting, which is crazy because that’s what happened in the first season. They had a whole set of scripts [then] and they rewrote everything to include the #MeToo movement, and now we’ve got other, larger, global phenomenon to deal with. I don’t know what they’re doing but I know they’re rewriting.”

Duplass also said that he’s excited to see how his character, Chip, recovers after his firing in the Season 1 finale. “Chip sees himself as not having done enough,” said the actor. “I think it’s really important that we all look at ourselves the way Chip looked at himself… I think if you’re going to tell a white man’s story right now, I think it’s a really interesting one to tell.”
