Ryan Murphy’s ‘Ratched’ Netflix Series to Premiere in September

Netflix has officially made an appointment with Ratched. The One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest prequel series finally got a release date today three years after it was snatched up by Netflix. Along with the date reveal, the streaming platform shared some first look images on Twitter showing Sarah Paulson as the iconic villainous nurse in Ryan Murphy‘s upcoming series, which premieres this fall.

Paulson stars Mildred Ratched in her early days as a nurse. She arrives in California in the 1940s and lands a job in a psychiatric hospital, where she eventually works her way up to head nurse. The series official description reads: “On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.”

Like most Murphy projects, Ratched is packed with an all-star cast. The upcoming drama also stars Cynthia Nixon (Gwendolyn Briggs), Judy Davis (Nurse Betsy Bucket), Sharon Stone (Lenore Osgood), Jon Jon Briones (Dr. Richard Hanover), Finn Wittrock (Edmund Tolleson), Charlie Carver (Huck), Alice Englert (Dolly), Amanda Plummer (Louise), Corey Stoll (Charles Wainwright), Sophie Okonedo (Charlotte), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Gov. George Wilburn).

Ratched, which got a two-season order back in 2017, is just the latest in a long list of Murphy’s Netflix shows. The producer has already gifted us with Hollywood and The Politician Season 2 just this past year, but he’s got plenty more in store, including A Chorus Line miniseries and an Andy Warhol docuseries. While we don’t know when we’ll get to devour his next projects, at least we have a countdown until Ratched. All eight episodes of Season 1 will drop on Netflix Sept. 18.
