‘Cheer’ Coach Monica Aldama Reacts to Six Emmy Nominations

The Navarro College cheerleading team is about to face Daytona 2.0. Yesterday, the Television Academy announced that Netflix’s Cheer has been nominated for six Emmy Awards, including the big kahuna of reality TV: Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. Coach Monica Aldama told E! News that her team is thrilled with the six Cheer Emmy nominations, and they can’t wait to compete against the likes of We’re Here and RuPaul’s Drag Race at the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards. Will Navarro be adding another banner to its gym?

In the months since Cheer first debuted in January, the Netflix docuseries (and its peppy cheerleaders) have taken the world by storm. This week, that love extended to the Television Academy, which rewarded the show with six Emmy nominations, including, Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program and Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program.

“Obviously, I’m so excited,” Navarro College cheer coach Monica Aldama told E! News of Cheer‘s 2020 Emmy nominations. “This is, you know, not really the world that I’m familiar with. So even just the thought of having an Emmy nomination was exciting to me. And to actually get six is just crazy.”

Aldama added that she and her players have been chatting about the nominations in their GroupMe, and each of her athletes has had a different reaction to the news. “La’Darius said, ‘You’re all welcome’ for his performances in Cheer for getting those Emmy nominations,” she said. “They’re just having so much fun. These kids will make you smile when you’re down no matter what. They’re just so funny and so fun to be around. So we’re just kind of cutting up and enjoying the moment right now.”

The Netflix star went on to say that she never could have imagined Cheer would get so much attention around the world, as initially, she “was just hopeful that people in our cheer community would watch it.” However, it soon became clear that the series had a much wider appeal. “When I was able to watch it, it’s just such a beautifully told story,” Aldama told E!. “The crew did such an amazing job. And I think they deserve every single one of those awards that they’re nominated for.”
