‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ Will Get a Gen Z Spin in New Comedy Central Series

Iconic characters Beavis and Butt-Head are returning to television with a new Comedy Central series. The reimagined Beavis and Butt-Head will reunite Gen X viewers with the teenage couch potatoes and place them in the current world of Gen Z kids, giving both viewership groups a chance to experience the animated magic. In addition to the new series, Comedy Central has announced an expansive deal with creator Mike Judge, who will produce additional Beavis and Butt-Head spinoffs and specials for the ViacomCBS network.

According to ViacomCBS, Comedy Central has already ordered two seasons of the new Beavis and Butt-Head series. Judge, the show’s original creator, will serve as head writer, producer, and voice actor for the two central characters.

Beavis and Butt-Head first premiered on MTV in 1993 and quickly defined that generation’s attitude towards adult animated comedies. The series centered on two unmotivated teens, Beavis and Butt-Head, who come face to face with a variety of serious issues, including childhood obesity, workers’ rights and unionization, and the shifting media landscape. The series ended in 1997 after seven seasons; in 2011, it was revived for an eighth season that ran for 22 episodes.

“It seemed like the time was right to get stupid again,” said Judge in a statement.

“We are thrilled to be working with Mike Judge and the great team at 3 Arts again as we double down on Adult Animation at Comedy Central,” added ViacomCBS’ Chris McCarthy, President of Entertainment & Youth Group. “Beavis and Butt-Head were a defining voice of a generation, and we can’t wait to watch as they navigate the treacherous waters of a world light-years from their own.”

The Beavis and Butt-Head news comes just two weeks after Comedy Central picked up a Daria spinoff seriesJodie. Produced by MTV Studios, Jodie will star Tracee Ellis-Ross as Jodie Landon, Daria Morgendorffer’s friend from Lawndale High.
