Not since Veep has a show been able to make campaigning this much fun. This week marks the return of The Politician, Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan’s comedy about one young man perfectly crafted for elections. If you’ve already sped through this latest season you likely have only one question on your mind: when is The Politician Season 3 coming out?

While this series’ first season revolved around a student body election, Season 2 brought out the big guns. This time around Payton’s political rival was Dede Standish (Judith Light), a seasoned and beloved New York state senator who had devoted over 40 years of her life to serving the people. Oh, and that rivalry also came with Dede’s ferocious Chief of Staff Hadassah Gold (Bette Midler). Wondering where this bonkers series can go from here? We have you covered.

Is The Politician Season 3 Happening?

It’s too early to say for sure. Netflix originally greenlit The Politician for two seasons. Since Season 2 just premiered this week it makes sense that Netflix has yet to announce this show’s future. But if we were a betting site we would say there’s more of Payton Hobart’s journey to come.

Netflix already spent a shocking $300 million just to keep Ryan Murphy around. It wouldn’t make any sense for them to cancel his first Netflix original after dropping all that coin. That move would especially be a bad one since Murphy has already hinted at a plan for The Politician‘s future.

In an interview with Collider Murphy said, “I think for me, for that show, I would like to do, and I think all of us involved in it, would probably like to do three seasons total. And I think where Season 2 ends, what I would love to do is take a couple of years off and have Ben Platt get a little bit older for his final race. That would obviously be a presidential race, right? That’s always what we had designed, and I think that’s what our plan is.”

When Will The Politician Season 3 Premiere?

Unfortunately if Season 3 happens it’s going to take a while. The only reason The Politician Season 2 came out so quickly was because this second season was being written and filmed at the same time as Season 1. Not only will Season 3 have to be written and produced on a more traditional timeline, but it also have COVID-19 to worry about. Also Murphy has said he wants the series to take a few years off to give Ben Platt time to age before jumping into Payton’s next big election. If there is a new season it’s likely going to take a few years.

What Could Happen in The Politician Season 3?

After nearly losing the only two elections in his life, Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) is poised for the White House. Season 2 ended with Payton barely winning the election to become State Senator of New York over the seasoned Dede Standish (Judith Light). But it turns out he wasn’t the only politician in the family.

Across the country Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow) made headlines by becoming Governor of California. Her brutally honest and funny campaign about climate change resonated with voters, so much so that when she decided to jump to the next political level America was on board. Season 2 ended three years in the future with Georgina as President of the United States and Dede as her Vice President. That dynamic duo isn’t going to last for long.

In The Politician‘s final moments Dede meets with Payton to tell him what’s to come. Georgina only plans on being a one term president. That means the path is clear for Dede to run for President and she’ll need her own VP. And after these women lower the running age from 35, Payton will very much be eligible. It seems like all of that moral hand-wringing has paid off. The Hobarts are taking the Oval Office.
