It’s Pokémon Day, and to celebrate, you can watch the new Pokemon movie on Netflix: Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution. What is Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution, you ask? It’s a computer-animated remake of Pokémon: The First Movie, the beloved 1998 anime film that millennials probably remember from their childhood.
Though the remake skips Pikachu’s Vacation, sadly, most of the movie is a faithful recreation of Mewtwo Strikes Back, with a few script tweaks and updates to battle moves and such. And just like with Pokemon: The First Movie, there is an after-credits scene. But while the first movie’s after-credits scene showed only Mew flying towards the mountains, this time, the after-credits scene is a little different.

Yes! There is a Pokémon Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution after-credits scene. It is very brief and it comes at the very end of about five minutes of credits, so you either have to be patient, or skip ahead to about the 1:35:00 timestamp on the movie. The scene is less than a minute long and shows Mewtwo, and the Pokémon clones that Mewtwo created, flying through the air, to a remix of the Pokémon theme song. The clones, we see, are flying to a beautiful mountain.
What does the Pokemon Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution after-credits scene mean?
Some of you probably recognized that mountain as Mount Quena, aka the location featured in Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns. This 2000 anime hour-long special was a direct sequel to Pokémon: The First Movie. It was not the second Pokémon movie—Pokémon: The Movie 2000 – The Power of One—which American fans may be more familiar with than Mewtwo Returns. But this after-credits scene featuring Mount Quena could suggest that Mewtwo Returns will be getting a computer-animated remake next, instead of The Power of One.
