Woman Crush Wednesday: We’ve Got Unbridled Enthusiasm for ‘Horse Girl’ Star Debby Ryan

After a brief hiatus, we are BACK with a new Woman Crush Wednesday, and in the new month of February, no less! There’s a lot to be excited about this month, whether it’s Valentine’s Day or the fact that we’ll have have a February 29th (Happy Leap Year!), and here to kick it all off is a wonderful woman we love, the talented Debby Ryan!
WHO’S THAT GAL: Debby Ryan
WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Ryan is Nikki, the pretty and socially-adept roommate to socially awkward Sarah (Alison Brie) in Netflix drama Horse Girl, which drops on the platform this Friday. Nikki helps set up lonely horse girl, Sarah, with sweet, bumbling Darren (John Reynolds) and they hit it off. However, it doesn’t take long for the film’s tone to change from rom-com to something deeper and perhaps even scarier. A recent review from Variety praised the Horse Girl  for its versatility and depth and for producing “a rare and piercingly compassionate exploration of the sorts of madness that come from intense loneliness, and the intense loneliness that comes from being regarded as mad.” This film is definitely one to watch, and we can’t wait to see what Ryan will bring to the table in it.
WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: You may know Ryan from another show popular on Netflix right now, dark comedy-drama Insatiable, in which she plays Patty Bladell, a teenager who was bullied in school for being overweight and as a result is looking to seek revenge on her tormenters after she loses the weight over the summer. However, this is just the most recent credit in what has already been a long and impressive acting career for the 26 year-old star. Her first ever screen acting gig was in 2006, when she had a recurring role as Debby alongside Madison Pettis and, of course, Barney, in Season 10 of Barney & Friends.

From there, Ryan practically took over Disney Channel, starting with her role as intelligent girl-next-door Bailey Pickett on The Suite Life on Deck alongside Dylan and Cole Sprouse, reprising the role to guest star on popular Disney shows Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place, before going on to star in her own hit Disney show from 2011 to 2015, Jessie, in which she plays the spunky Jessie Prescott, who moves from Texas to New York City on her own, where she accepts a job as a nanny for a wealthy family on the Upper West Side. Ryan has since moved on from Disney, with a main role in YouTube Red show Sing It!, guest hosting in an episode of CBS’s The Talk, and appearing as Jennifer in 2018 Melissa McCarthy comedy film Life of the Party. So many great roles, and many more to come!
WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Ryan is continuing to crush it for another year, as she is already set to be in a film coming out this year, Netflix thrilled Night Teeth, which begins filming this month. The film follows a young chauffeur who drives two beautiful women (Ryan and Lucy Fry) to different parties, but soon ends up having to fight for his life when they are not who they say they are. This is just the start in what looks to be another big year for Ryan, and we definitely can’t wait to see what else 2020 has in store for her.
