Did You Catch The ‘Sabrina’ Crossover On Last Night’s ‘Riverdale’?

The first part of the new season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina doesn’t drop on Netflix until tomorrow (January 24), but we already got a neat little surprise appearance from a Greendale resident on last night’s (January 22) episode of Riverdale. No, it wasn’t Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) stopping by to cast a spell on Archie Andrews (KJ Apa). Rather, it was a minor character, a member of the Baxter High football team, in keeping with the episode’s “Varsity Blues” football and cheerleading focus.

Spoilers for Riverdale past this point, but in the episode Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) gets assigned a feature on the Riverdale High versus Stonewall Prep football game, and uses the opportunity to dig up some dirt on Bret Weston Wallis (Sean Depner) and his preppie cronies. Very quickly — thanks to a tip from Reggie Mantle (Charles Melton) — she discovers that the Stonewall team doesn’t play fair. In fact, they like to hurt the other team’s star players, badly.

While building her story, she interviews a number of football players in Pop’s: one from the neighboring town of Centerville; one from Seaside High; and a character who might look familiar from Greendale, the town where it’s always Halloween.

That character is none other than Billy Marlin (Ty Wood), who has appeared in eight episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina so far. He’s a member of the Baxter High Ravens who, of note, we know regularly play the Riverdale High Bulldogs thanks to a sign on a wall in the first season of Sabrina. If you’re having trouble conjuring Billy’s face to mind, that’s fine! Here it is on Riverdale:

…and as for Sabrina, he started as your typical dumb jock. He was one of the dudes Sabrina and the Weird Sisters taunted in a mine early in the series, and he was merciless when Theo Putnam (Lachlan Watson) transitioned. He got his comeuppance from Aunt Hilda (Lucy Davis), though, when she revealed he had suffered a traumatic experience at 11 that was powering his bullying. Since then, Billy and the rest of the gang have been nice to Theo, which is nice! Nice things are nice.

This isn’t the first time Greendale has crossed over with Riverdale: the gang has traveled near and mentioned the witchy town multiple times; and earlier this season a newspaper headline teased a wicked carnival that will pop up in Part 3 of Sabrina. But this marks the first Sabrina character that’s shown up on Riverdale proper. Call it a trade, of sorts, for Benjamin Button (sigh, his real name, really) popping up on Sabrina for a weird bit of crossover madness last season.

Oh, and don’t think this is the last time you’ll see the Greendale and Riverdale exchange program in action. Without getting into spoilers, you can expect a lot more of the Town With Pep when Chilling Adventures of Sabrina drops tomorrow on Netflix. But will we finally get to see Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) hook up with Kevin Keller (Casey Cott)? One can only hope.

Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
