‘Hellboy’ (2019) on HBO: Will the David Harbour Reboot Find New Life on Streaming?

As we count down the days to both the holidays and the Oscars, the movie theaters are overflowing with films to see this weekend. But for those who want to stay home, there are plenty of options, including Hellboy on HBO, which is airing tonight at 8 p.m. ET. No, not the 2004 Guillermo del Toro Hellboy starring Ron Perlman—which, by the way, is on Netflix. This is the 2019 Hellboy starring everyone’s favorite grumpy father figure from Stranger Things, David Harbour.

Directed by Neil Marshall, the film is intended as a reboot of del Toro’s film and is a darker, R-rated take on the character Perlman portrayed in 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). It was widely disliked by both fans and critics—currently, the film holds just a 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes—making it one of the lowest-rated major studio films of the year on the review aggregation website. It was more than just a critical disappointment for Lionsgate, however—it also was a box office bomb. It’s opening weekend saw the film making just $12 million, and at the end of its run the film had made a total of $44.6 million worldwide. It failed to make back its production budget of roughly $50 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Even accounting for angry fans who miss del Toro, that’s less than the film expected to make, considering the popularity of superhero films these days. Of course, though Hellboy may be a superhero film, the superhero film to end all superhero films came out a mere two weeks after Hellboy debuted: AKA Avengers: Endgame, which set the all-time box office record. So that certainly didn’t help.

But perhaps some curious comic book fans (and not to mention David Harbour fans—don’t underestimate the power of Stranger Things) will check out the film now that it’s on streaming. What happens between you and your HBO account stays between you and your HBO account, right? Streaming may be the last chance that Hellboy (2019) gets to salvage its reputation.

We wouldn’t count on it, though. After all, Avengers: Endgame is streaming on Disney+.
