After everything that’s happened on Riverdale, the teens of the town need some serious help. And good news, they’re going to get it: Season 4, Episode 8 is officially titled “Chapter Sixty-Five: In Treatment.” In the episode, a counselor visits Riverdale High, and I sure hope they’re prepared because there are a lot more floating babies and bear attacks to talk about than your regular, run of the mill therapy session.
Picking up after the Thanksgiving episode, “Chapter Sixty-Four: The Ice Storm,” we don’t know a lot about this hour — including the official air date — other than the (as yet unnamed) counselor popping up, and that Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) will finally discuss what happened last season when Alice stole Betty’s college money as part of an undercover operation to take down a cult known as The Farm.
Again, I really don’t think whoever is coming to counsel these characters knows what they’re in for.
That said, based on these pics it’s fair to speculate this might be something brought on by new school principal, Mr. Honey (Kerr Smith).
Mr. Honey has been a strange addition to the show. Though on the surface he seems no-nonsense, he’s actually been “some aggressively vengeful nonsense.” First he tangled with Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) over her wanting to have a school dance; and when she threw a house party instead, he called the cops on her. Then when Reggie Mantle (Charles Melton) vandalized his office on Halloween night, he had a heart to heart with him before revealing that, in the meantime, he had wrecked Reggie’s car.
So is this counselor brought in by Mr. Honey? And if so, is it to heal the school, or part of some elaborate, extremely dark prank?
Regardless, it seems like Cheryl and her girlfriend Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) will be hashing out some issues of their own, which is good news for anyone at their wits end over the “Cheryl is talking to her brother’s corpse and also a doll haunted by the spirit of her other brother who she ate in the womb” storyline. You know, that old chestnut:
If anyone at Riverdale High needs some actual professional help, it’s Cheryl. And regardless of whether the counselor is on the level or not, it seems like Cheryl will be helped — in the next episode, the midseason finale, she’ll finally be putting the (metaphorical) spirit of her brother to rest, for good. Praise Beebo.
Meanwhile, it looks like Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and Mary Andrews (Molly Ringwald) will be sharing a very large salad, which is a nice change from Archie’s regular diet of entire pans full of scrambled eggs:
…and despite his teacher Mr. Chipping (Sam Witwer) tossing himself out a window last episode, it looks like Jughead is still alive and well, at least as of the taking of this photo. He also still has his beanie, so it takes place before his “death” during Spring Break.
The big question, though, via the title: will Gabriel Byrne be reprising his award-winning role as therapist Dr. Paul Weston from HBO’s In Treatment for this episode? Probably not, but one can hope!
Riverdale airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW.
