A Bunch Of Streaming Devices Will Lose Netflix Service on December 1

If you’ve been thinking about updating your television or Roku, now’s the perfect time. Beginning December 1, 2019, users with certain models of Samsung televisions and Roku devices will no longer be able to access Netflix. The streaming giant claims that “technical limitations” will cause older devices to lose service on December 1, but it did not specify exactly what kind of “limitations” customers should expect.

In recent weeks, Netflix users watching on certain Roku and Samsung devices have seen the following message pop up on their screens: “Due to technical limitations, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after December 1st, 2019. Please visit netflix.com/compatibledevices for a list of available devices.”

Netflix’s Help Center explains that the “message will appear multiple times before the date as a reminder” to subscribers that they must find a new way of accessing the service come December 1. To better assist customers making the switch, Netflix has compiled an official list of compatible devices that includes dozens of options, including Apple TV, Amazon FireTV, new Roku models, and various cable set-top boxes.

According to Lifehacker, Netflix has yet to provide a full list of Samsung and Roku models that will no longer be supported. However, the Samsung website notes that 2010 and 2011 televisions with a “C or D after the screen size in the model code” are among those losing direct Netflix service (you’ll still be able to watch on older Samsung TVs via another Netflix-supported device, like a FireTV Stick or new Roku). In order to find your television’s model code, head to Samsung’s support page.

Lifehacker also lists the following Roku devices that will no longer support Netflix on December 1:

  • Roku 2000C
  • Roku 2050X
  • Roku 2100X
  • Roku HD
  • Roku SD
  • Roku XD
  • Roku XR
  • Any other Roku devices that cannot auto-play the next episode
