Game of Thrones fans suffered through the final season of their beloved fantasy series on HBO, cursing writers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for their choices as they watched, but watching every episode out of loyalty nonetheless. Kit Harington, apparently, did not do that. According to the Jon Snow actor, he still hasn’t seen the eighth and final season of the show that made him a really big deal. I’m sorry… what?
Last night, while Harington was backstage with his Game of Thrones co-stars, the cast and crew was asked to comment on the controversy surrounding the final season. (You can watch the video yourself on Variety’s YouTube page.) For a moment, no one said anything, then Harington stepped confidently up to the mic and said, “I’ll take this one. What was it? Controversy. I still haven’t seen the show, so that’s how I dealt with that controversy. I haven’t seen the final season, but I know what it took to shoot it and it was hard and everyone put their love and effort into it.”
Hold up. Kit Harington never watched the eighth season of Game of Thrones? Is he joking? Is that the Emmy Awards open bar talking? But if he’s joking, why did he go on to say that bit about knowing what it’s like to film it? It’s not like the final season of Game of Thrones was the biggest television event of the year or anything. It’s not like it was the only thing anyone anywhere was talking about. Bro, seriously, that season wrapped up in May! You’ve had four months to watch it! You’re telling me Kit Harington never watched Jon Snow go on a dragon date with his aunt, but I had to watch it? How is that fair?
Harrington went on to say, “Controversy for us, we knew what we were doing was right story-wise, and we knew that it was right for the characters because we lived with them for 10 years. Controversy for us, didn’t really affect us.” The controversy also had little effect on the show’s wins at the Emmys, where it took home 12 total awards, the most of any other series nominated.
You do you, Kit Harington. I guess Jon Snow really does know nothing.
