America’s Got Talent has crowned a new champion. On Wednesday night, singer Kodi Lee, who is blind and autistic, was named the AGT Season 14 winner — an incredibly well-deserved honor. Lee has impressed the judges throughout this season with his moving story and magnetic voice, and during last night’s finale, he did it again, this time joining Leona Lewis for a duet of “You Are The Reason.” Watch Lee’s inspiring performance below.
Lee may have been a favorite heading into the AGT finale, but he still faced some stiff competition on Wednesday night. The finale saw remaining acts preparing for one final performance with their personal heroes, and the contestants left it all out on the stage. When all was said and done, Lee was named the winner, with the Detroit Youth Choir in second place, comedian Ryan Niemiller in third, and dance group V.Unbeatable in third. As this season’s winner, Lee will walk away with $1 million in prize money and headline a Las Vegas show from November 7 to 10. For tickets, go to NBC.com/AGTLive.
Lee’s America’s Got Talent journey began back in May, when he auditioned with a rendition of Donny Hathaway’s “A Song for You.” His performance moved the judges to tears, and it impacted Gabrielle Union so much that she awarded Lee the first Golden Buzzer of the season. The clip of Lee’s audition quickly went viral, and from that point on, he became this season’s fan favorite contestant.
In August, Lee performed Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and was again praised by the judges. “I want to thank Paul Simon, who never really gives permission for anyone to sing [“Bridge Over Troubled Water”] because it’s very precious to him, and he gave [Lee] clearance within 30 minutes,” explained Cowell before the performance. Afterwards, even the notoriously cold judge was moved beyond belief. “You are genuinely one of most extraordinary people and talents we’ve had the great fortune to have on any show we’ve ever made,” he said.
