A ‘Game of Thrones’ Petition to Remake the Final Season is Blowing Up Like King’s Landing

The final season of Game of Thrones has now inspired a snowballing Change.org petition calling on HBO to “Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.” As of publication time, almost 400,000 people have signed the Change.org Game of Thrones petition, which is either inspiring or incredibly stupid depending on your perspective.

Game of Thrones Season 8 was hyped as one of the biggest television events of all time, and after a coffee cup gaffe and one character’s shocking heel turn, it’s also become for some viewers one of the biggest letdowns ever. One miffed fan named Dylan D. decided to take matters into his own hands. He started a Change.org petition to get HBO to remake the final season of Game of Thrones.

“David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on,” Dylan D. wrote. “This series deserves a final season that makes sense.”

While there are arguments to be made that the final season and Daenerys’s dark actions in “The Bells” do make sense, it seems a lot of people agree with Dylan D.

However, it’s unlikely that this petition will actually change anything. After all, last week’s episode of “The Bells” scored a record 12.48 million live viewers, making it the most watched episode in the show’s whole run. So it’s not like HBO’s suffering in the ratings department. Also Disney chief Bob Iger confirmed that Lucasfilm is giving Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss the next Star Wars trilogy. That means their careers are doing just fine. Furthermore, A Song of Ice and Fire author George RR Martin has confirmed that Benioff and Weiss are building the final seasons to end the way the books are currently set to conclude. (So, actually, if you’re a fan of the books and series, what you’re seeing is what you were always going to get.) Finally, there’s something called fan fiction. That’s where fans are supposed to rewrite their favorite stories.

Still, the over 391,000 people who have signed Dylan D.’s petition are succeeding in letting their displeasure be known, and Dylan D. still clings to hope. “Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!” he wrote.

The Game of Thrones Series Finale premieres Sunday, May 19, 2019 on HBO.
