‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8, Episode 2 Trailer Breakdown: War Is Coming

Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2 is still about a week away. Luckily, we have a 30 second preview to breakdown.

What Is It?

The Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2 preview. Note, HBO is not giving up a name.

What Are We Basically Seeing?

The Game of Thrones Season 8, Episode 2 preview opens with ominous music and Jaime Lannister standing alone in Winterfell’s great hall. Daenerys is speaking. “When I was a child, my brother would tell me a bedtime story about the man who murdered our father — and all the things we would do to him.” During this, Jaime looks anxiously at someone…probably Bran…but we also get looks at stone cold Sansa.

Then we see Sansa and Daenerys sizing each other up in the great hall, while we cut to a scene where Daenerys says, “He never should have trusted Cersei,” and Sansa bluntly responds, “You never should have either.”

Then, as weapons are being forged, and while Daenerys approaches a worried Jon in the Winterfell crypts, we hear Arya’s voiceover from the original season trailer: “Death. It’s got many faces. I look forward to seeing this one.”

Then, it’s a quick montage of battle preparations, swords being drawn, Arya shooting an arrow (callback to the first episode!), and Tormund arriving at Winterfell. There’s some sweet trebuchet action, and we get a glimpse at the pre-battle Missandei/Grey Worm kiss from the official trailer. Jon asks Tormund how long they have, and he says, “Before the sun comes up tomorrow.”

Where Should I Pause It?

I saw three moments that intrigued me.

  • Around 0:15, when Daenerys is admitting someone shouldn’t have trusted Cersei — this is obviously Tyrion, so her subterfuge gets found out next week.
  • At 0:20 we see Ser Jorah Mormont unsheathing a sword, but the blade is black. It looks like Gendry is working overtime in that forge. Maybe the team at Winterfell is better armed than we might think.
  • Circa 0:30, Jon enters into the Winterfell yard looking stunned. WHAT IS HE LOOKING AT? (I think Tormund and the Night’s Watch returning.)

What Do You Think is Going to Happen Next Week?

The first act of the episode will likely be Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen and company dealing with the arrival of Jaime Lannister. As I wrote, Jaime probably won’t be welcome up north — on account that he’s a Lannister, and he crippled Bran, and murdered Daenerys’s father, and stabbed Ned Stark, etc. — so he’ll need someone in his corner. My vote is for Bran Stark, of all people.

Then I think that Sansa Stark will strut around Daenerys Targaryen because of course Cersei Lannister was going to betray them, and they were stupid not to see it coming. The two of them will have to come to either some sort of peace, or split farther apart. Oh, and Jon Snow will have to break the news of his birthright to his girlfriend/aunt. I think that’s the crypt scene.  I also don’t think she’ll take the news very well.

Then it seems that Tormund Giantsbane and the Night’s Watch arrive at Winterfell to give the bad news that the White Walkers are coming. My solemn guess is that the last act will be everyone preparing for battle…which will be the giant-sized Episode 3.
