Game of Thrones Season 8 wasn’t HBO’s only major release yesterday: the premium cabler also dropped the first full-length teaser for Big Little Lies, which returns for its second season on June 9. The minute-long spot teases the return of the newly-minted “Monterey Five,” a group bound together by the shocking events of the Season 1 finale. In the wake of (spoiler, but it’s also been almost two years so really you should just watch) Perry’s death, the Monterey Five are tested like never before — particularly now that Perry’s mother (Meryl Streep!) has arrived to search for the truth about that fateful night.
After sweeping the awards circuit as a limited series, Big Little Lies Season 2 has some big shoes to fill, and the teaser trailer more than delivers. “We’re kidding ourselves if we think people will stop talking,” says Nicole Kidman’s Celeste at the beginning of the trailer. It soon becomes clear that everyone is a little suspicious about what happened at trivia night, including people who don’t know the women at all. “You’re one of the Monterey Five, right?” a surfer asks Jane (Shailene Woodley). Despite the “scarlet letters” on their chests, the women try to go about their daily lives, but the arrival of Mary Louise Wright (Streep) threatens to topple them all. “I want to know what happened that night,” Mary Louise asks Madeleine (Reese Witherspoon). “I’m very tempted to ask you, but I don’t think I would get the truth, would I?”
Big Little Lies Season 2 reunites the entire original cast, including Witherspoon, Kidman, Woodley, Laura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz. Adam Scott, James Tupper, and Jeffrey Nordling will also return as the various husbands and partners, and Iain Armitage, Kathryn Newton, and Darby Camp will reprise their roles as the Monterey Five’s children. While Streep is the major new addition to BLL Season 2, Douglas Smith (Big Love), Crystal Fox, and Mo McRae have also joined the all-star cast.
