Warner Bros. Shuts Down Trump’s ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Scored Campaign Video

The Trump administration just learned a valid lesson about messing with Batman. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump shared a 2020 campaign video featuring Hans Zimmer’s score from The Dark Knight Rises, the final installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Within hours, millions of people had seen the video — including Warner Brothers Pictures, which was not thrilled that the music had been used without consent. According to BuzzFeed News, Warner Bros. filed a copyright infringement complaint, and by late Tuesday night, the video had been removed from Twitter and YouTube.

“The use of Warner Bros.’ score from The Dark Knight Rises in the campaign video was unauthorized,” said a Warner Bros. spokesperson shortly before the removal. “We are working through the appropriate legal channels to have it removed.” Just a few hours later, the company’s efforts paid off. While Trump’s tweet is still available, the video has been replaced with a message that reads, “This media has been disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner.”

According to Variety, the two-minute campaign video placed footage of the 2016 election and Trump’s current tenure over a soundtrack of Zimmer’s “Why Do We Fall?” from The Dark Knight Rises. “First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they call you a racist. Donald J. Trump. Your vote. Proved them all wrong. Trump: The Great Victory. 2020,” read dramatic text in a font that was also similar to the film’s title cards. The now-deleted video went on to juxtapose Trump with prominent Democrats like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Rosie O’Donnell in an attempt to establish the president as the “winner” of the group.

BuzzFeed News reports that the video Trump tweeted was lifted from a YouTube video, “President Donald Trump 2020 trailer,” posted on Reddit. The original video, uploaded by user MateyProductions, has also been taken down and replaced with a message that reads, “This video contains content from Warner Bros. Entertainment, who has blocked it on copyright grounds.”
