We’re going to dive right into the Season 8 finale of Suits, so obvious spoilers ahead.

Let’s talk about the one thing Suits fans will be obsessing over until the Season 9 premiere: The return of Daniel Hardman. Kidding. Although, honestly, I’ll never say no to more David “Wags” Costabile on my screen. After over 100 episodes of flirtatious banter and stolen glances, Harvey Specter and Donna Paulsen finally hooked up. This wasn’t the duo’s first tryst (as explained in Season 3’s “The Other Time”), but this prominent will they/won’t they couple’s reunion was inevitable as the long-running series sets its sights on its endgame.

When it was announced last month that the next season of Suits would be the show’s last, all signs pointed to a Donna and Harvey romance. Rachel and Mike got married and Louis achieved the personal and professional success he so desperately craved, so Donna and Harvey was the last card the show had left to play. And play it they did. While the finale (aptly titled “Harvey”) nominally dealt with Harvey once again being threatened by an outside source and once again surviving (thanks to the benevolence of the departing Robert Zane), the underlying theme of the episode was the idea that success is meaningless unless you have someone to share it with.

Let’s delve into the final scene of the Suits finale.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: WHAT’S THE SONG FROM THE SUITS FINALE THAT SCORES THE HARVEY AND DONNA HOOK UP?

If you’re like me, you started typing “And when my heart won’t break; an empty space between my lungs” or “love is mystical” into Google the second Suits ended. Let me save you the trouble: The song that played during Harvey and Donna’s final scene was “Love is Mystical” by The Cold War Kids.

WHERE CAN I LISTEN TO THE SONG FROM THE SUITS FINALE (LOVE IS MYSTICAL)?

IS ROBERT ZANE LEAVING SUITS? IS WENDELL PIERCE LEAVING SUITS?

In yet another Suits shocker, it was an innocent Robert Zane taking the bullet for Harvey at the disbarment hearing to atone for his own past sins.

“The decision to write Robert off was entirely driven by Wendell’s schedule,” Suits creator Aaron Korsh told Deadline. “We were told we would not have access to him during the first two thirds of our shooting dates next year. Turns out, he is performing Death of a Salesman in London. We also knew he might go directly from that to Jack Ryan.”

Korsh also added that he hopes to have “a little bit of access to Wendell next season.”

WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN HARVEY AND DONNA ON SUITS?

Even though the series did an admirable job of throwing Thomas Kessler into the mix, we knew he was only there to delay the inevitable. Suits is a fairly overt show, but the second half of Season 8 succeeded in constantly reminding us of just how lonely Harvey’s been since Mike left. Episode 14 resolved the only real threat to a Harvey/Donna relationship (Abigail Spencer’s Scottie), and throughout the finale, Alex (the always terrific Dulé Hill) subtly and not so subtly helped steer both Harvey and Donna towards each other. The series accomplished this using a fun bit of narrative symmetry.

The Season 7 episode (titled “Donna”) concludes with Donna kissing Harvey and saying “I just had to know.” In tonight’s finale, it’s Harvey who shows up on Donna’s doorstep, and eight seasons of sexual tension melt away without a single word uttered.

The endgame for the series was never in doubt, but props to the show for hinting at a possible Harvey/Samantha relationship as a misdirect. If you recall, Episode 14 ended with those two grabbing a drink, and Robert Zane’s ambiguous statement to Samantha in the finale could’ve been interpreted in a variety of ways.

“I’ve seen you and Harvey together,” he tells Samantha. “You two are peas in a pod. Go to him, seek him out. And who knows, over time you might even…” and then of course he’s cut off. As the seconds ticked away and Harvey and Samantha were the only ones remaining in the office, I was thinking, “Ugh. Are they really going to postpone the Donna/Harvey thing AGAIN?” Instead, it’s Sam who truly hammers home what Robert and Alex were trying to convey to Harvey.

“He didn’t just accept me; he loved me,” Samantha says, referring to her friendship with Robert. “It’s not easy to find someone like that in this world. I mean, what am I supposed to do when I have a big victory or a terrible loss and the only person I want to run and tell isn’t there?”

The rest is history. Those words compel Harvey to sprint to Donna’s doorstep and then, finally, they bone.
